Howard scores for Everton

Adam Bogdan

updated 10:29 p.m. ET Jan. 4, 2012

LONDON - Tim Howard became the fourth goalkeeper to score in the Premier League when the American put in a wind-blown clearance from about 100 yards during Everton's 2-1 loss to Bolton on Wednesday night.

The American, playing his 250th Premier League match, gave Everton a 63rd-minute lead at Goodison Park. His right-footed kick from about 5 yards inside his own penalty area bounced about 30 yards from the Bolton goal and was blown by the wind over leaping Bolton keeper Adam Bogdan, who was standing by his 6-yard box. Howard hardly reacted.

"I was delighted that we were in the lead and would hopefully go on to get three points, but it's not a nice feeling for a keeper. It's really awful actually," Howard told Sky Sports. "For the back four and the goalkeepers at both ends, there was an awful wind swirling. You could see everybody was mistiming balls. Defenders were missing clearances that normally they would put up the field. I think the wind is the hardest condition to play in. Snow, rain, sun doesn't matter, but the wind really does play tricks on you."

Howard spoke with Bogdan after the match.

"I let him know that I was feeling for him," Howard said. "It's not a nice place to be. I've been there before, a long, long time ago, and that was why I didn't celebrate."

Bolton rallied on goals by David Ngog in the 67th and Gary Cahill in the 78th.

The only other goalkeepers to score in the Premier League are Peter Schmeichel, American Brad Friedel and Paul Robinson.

Friedel scored for Blackburn following a corner kick at Charlton in the 90th minute on Feb. 21, 2004, but Claus Jensen scored seconds later to give Charlton a 3-2 win. Schmeichel's goal also was in a losing effort, for Aston Villa in a 3-2 defeat at Everton on Oct. 20, 2001. Robinson scored in a 3-1 home win over Watford on March 17.

The game marked the return to Everton of American midfielder Landon Donovan.

(AP) ? The stock market got a big jump on a better year.

Stocks rose sharply Tuesday in the first trading of 2012 as investors returned from the holiday and found encouraging economic reports from the United States and around the world.

The Dow Jones industrial average rose more than 260 points in morning trading and maintained most of the gains. At about 3:30 p.m. EST, the Dow was up 205 points, or 1.7 percent, at 12,418.

The Standard & Poor's 500 index was up 21 points at 1,278. The S&P, a broader gauge of the overall market than the Dow, finished 2011 almost exactly where it started ? down a sliver, 0.04 of a point.

The market could be getting an extra boost this year from what's known as the January effect: Investors sell stocks at the end of the year to lock in losses for tax purposes, then come back in January and buy stocks to reinvest.

And the effect could be more pronounced this year because the stock market was so volatile in 2011 and more investors were forced to take losses, said Sam Stovall, chief equity strategist at Standard & Poor's Capital IQ.

Those investors are back hunting for bargains, he said: "Investors are a lot like dieters and look to January as a new beginning."

January is a fairly good predictor of the year to come for U.S. stocks. Only seven times since 1950 has January turned out to be a "major error" in predicting the year to come, according to the Stock Trader's Almanac.

In other words, whichever direction the market has gone in January, the rest of the year has usually followed.

The "major errors" are usually extraordinary events, the almanac points out. In 2001, for example, the S&P 500 rose 3.5 percent in January, but the market was rocked by the Sept. 11 attacks and finished the year down 13 percent.

The first day of the year is less useful for fortunetelling than the first month. If you were to bet on whether the market would finish the year up or down based on how it performed the first day, you would be right only about half the time.

And there's no special power to January. A strong market in any single month makes it more likely that the market will be higher over the 12 months to come, Dan Greenhaus, chief global strategist at the brokerage BTIG, pointed out in a note to clients.

"As goes any month, so goes any 12-month period," he said. "This is not the exclusive province of January."

Predictive ability aside, Tuesday was on track to be the fourth time a row the market rose on opening day. On Jan. 3, 2011, on its way to flat-lining for the year, the S&P rose 14 points.

Bank stocks and materials and industrial companies posted the largest gains. Alcoa, which produces aluminum, and JPMorgan Chase bank each rose more than 5 percent, making them the biggest winners among the 30 stocks in the Dow.

The market's gains were broad. All but two of the 30 Dow stocks were higher by 2 p.m. Of the 10 major categories of stocks in the S&P 500 index, one, utilities, was lower. Utilities are traditionally conservative stocks to own.

In the latest sign of strength in the U.S. economy, manufacturing expanded in December at the fastest pace in six months. Construction spending jumped in November as builders spent more on single-family homes, apartments and remodeling projects.

Germany, Europe's largest economy, reported that the average number of people unemployed last year was the lowest in two decades. Germany has an unemployment rate of 6.6 percent, compared with 8.6 percent in the United States.

And a Chinese manufacturing index rose in December, reversing a November slide and raising hopes that China's economic slowdown is under control.

The economic reports overshadowed, at least for a day, concerns in the global markets about the European debt crisis, which will probably be the main catalyst for markets in the weeks ahead.

Earlier Tuesday, the government of debt-crippled Greece warned that it would have to ditch the euro currency if the details of a second international bailout worth $169 billion can't be worked out.

Investors have been afraid that a Greek exit from the euro currency union would further disrupt the Greek economy and cause heavy losses for European banks that hold Greek government debt, perhaps triggering a global financial crisis.

The second Greek bailout was approved last October, but Greece still has to persuade its creditors, including banks and investment firms, to take steep losses on their holdings of Greek debt.

Greece also says more tax increases and spending cuts may be required. A spokesman for the Greek government, Pantelis Kapsis, said negotiations in the next three or four months with international debt monitors will "determine everything."

U.S. investors were also reacting to news they had missed out on during the holidays:

? On Dec. 30, a federal court delayed the implementation of new air-pollution regulations. Coal stocks did well Tuesday: Peabody Energy Corp. and James River Coal Co. soared 9 percent and Alpha Natural Resources Inc. 7 percent.

? Last week, a JPMorgan analyst told clients that two wireless companies, Leap Wireless International Inc. and MetroPCS Communications Inc., could be targeted by AT&T or T-Mobile for takeovers. MetroPCS rose 8 percent Tuesday, and Leap rose 5 percent.

In other corporate news:

? Chesapeake Energy Corp. rose 4 percent after the energy company sold a part of its Ohio oil and gas business to a unit of French energy company Total SA for $2.32 billion.

? Rambus Inc. jumped 8 percent after the technology licensing company raised its fourth-quarter revenue forecast to $83 million from an earlier range of $66 million to $71 million.

LONDON ? Rupert Murdoch has begun the new year by setting up in a new field of communications ? he?s started tweeting.

The media mogul, who is recovering from perhaps his most difficult year in the business, is posting on Twitter under the handle rupertmurdoch, spokeswoman Daisy Dunlop at News International confirmed Monday.

The account was opened over the New Year?s holiday, but many doubted its authenticity because Murdoch, 80, has generally tried to stay out of the spotlight as his media empire comes under increased scrutiny because of widespread phone hacking at his U.K. newspapers.

Murdoch faced harsh questioning in Parliament last summer and may face additional questions from the wide-ranging Leveson Inquiry into media practices later this year, but he makes no mention of these troubles in his tweets, which include the News Corp. chief?s New Year?s resolutions.

?My resolutions, try to maintain humility and always curiosity,? he tweets. ?And of course diet!?

Murdoch had attracted more than 46,000 followers by Monday morning, just two days after he started tweeting. His wife Wendi Deng has also started tweeting ? she?s wendi?deng.

She refers to the setbacks of the last year in her tweets: ?A lot of bad things happened in 2011 but I hope in 2012 we can put them all behind us and sail on to a bright future for everyone Wxx.?

She also gently reminds fellow tweeters to spell her first name with an ?i? at the end, not a ?y.?

The Murdochs? entry into the world of Twitter was met with some bemusement and some hostility by its denizens.

John Prescott, former U.K. deputy prime minister, came up with one of the wittier responses to Murdoch?s unexpected surfacing at the very public, very popular micro-blogging site.

?Welcome to Twitter,? he writes to the mogul, whose reporters were skilled at hacking into telephone messaging systems. ?I?ve left you a Happy New Year message on my voicemail!?

Others express fears that the wealthy Murdoch will buy the Twitter site.

Murdoch also deleted a tweet in which he suggested that Britons might have too many public holidays for a country facing tough times.

At times in his tweets Murdoch sounds bored with his New Year?s holiday. He complains that there are ?too many people? on the island of St. Bart?s, an exclusive Caribbean hideaway.

?Back to work tomorrow,? he says. ?Enough idling!?

Murdoch also tweets that some of his friends are ?frightened? by what he might say.

He also praises Mike Bloomberg, the Republican mayor of New York City, and Rick Santorum, a Republican presidential candidate.

Murdoch tweeted his wishes for a happy new year and said it would probably exceed expectations.

?Happy 2012,? he says. ?May it be better than all experts predict. Has to be! Must must change everything to create jobs for all, especially young.?

His Twitter profile is accompanied by a snapshot showing Murdoch grimacing. He is wearing a casual white T-shirt with a light blue sweater.

Murdoch was forced to close the News of the World last year because of widespread phone hacking at the tabloid. The victims included celebrities, sports stars, and a murdered teenager whose voicemails had been hacked.

The scandal has damaged Murdoch?s financial holdings and raised doubts about whether his family can retain control of the company, which has substantial interests in newspapers, magazines, movies, television and book publishing.

Renters want to be green, too, and developers respond - Finance ...

The apartment building at 701 Second St. N. in Minneapolis is under construction and slated to open later this year. It will include several green building concepts, including food composting and energy-efficient HVAC and plumbing systems. (Staff photo: Bill Klotz)

Composting food waste is an eco-conscious activity typically associated with single-family home neighborhoods rather than apartment complexes. But composting will be easy for residents of the green-centric apartment complex being built at 701 2nd St. N. in Minneapolis, which will open later this year.

Next to the chute that carries residents? trash to the building?s ground floor, a second chute is designated for organic food waste, to be picked up by a trash hauler for composting.

It?s one of a lengthy list of green features incorporated in the 100-unit building being developed by local developers Curt Gunsbury and T.E. Miller. Green design and construction has become the rule rather than the exception, according to local apartment developers and architects.

?A lot of green elements are becoming commonplace,? said Dan Pellinen, a senior associate architect at Minneapolis-based Tushi Montgomery & Associates, which designed the 701 building.

One of the building?s most obvious green features will be a white roof, designed to deflect summertime heat, along with some green roof areas. Another will be two 5,000-gallon tanks to collect rainwater, reducing the storm water management bill charged by the city.

The building?s HVAC and plumbing systems were chosen for their energy efficiency, along with doors, windows, insulation and Energy Star-rated appliances. Contractors are recycling at least 70 percent of the materials they use. Bike racks and nearby access to Hour Car car-sharing are other elements intended to reduce the project?s environmental impact.

Of course, there are costs associated with going green: Along with the upfront expense are costs for operation and maintenance, Pellinan said. But developers are willing to invest in green features ?when they see that consumers are requesting them, or they think it will be an important factor in their decision making? ? especially among the under-35 age group most landlords are targeting. Payback periods of five years or less also help make the decision ?a no-brainer,? he noted.

The green building trend ?has affected the whole building industry,? Pellinan said. ?These are things architects and engineers are taking as commonplace right now. Even if they are not going after LEED certification ? because that takes a lot of time, effort and money to produce the documentation ? they are opting to do a lot of ?green? things just so they can reap the benefits.?

Gunsbury, who has developed several other green apartment complexes in Minneapolis, contends that going green has enabled some residents to reduce their utility costs by as much as 75 percent compared with their previous residences ? ?especially in heat and electricity use,? Gunsbury said. ?Not many properties sub-meter water use like we do (instead they do a percentage of gross building use), so it?s hard to get a comparison for water use. It would be interesting to do a full study of comparable buildings to verify our anecdotal data.

?Underwriters have been surprised by our low energy use in our common areas and usually ask for our bookkeeper to verify the numbers,? he added.

?All construction materials and methods evolve over time,? Gunsbury said. ?Pretty much all new construction is green now, based on changes in building codes and what customers are asking for.?

Green elements have become standard features in apartments built by Plymouth-based Dominium Development and Acquisition LLC, the largest Minnesota-based owner of multifamily housing, said co-managing partner Armand Brachman. Dominium?s most recent Twin Cities projects have featured energy-efficient HVAC systems, lighting and plumbing, along with Energy Star-rated windows, shingles, insulation and other products.

Often, ?when people come to rent an apartment they will ask whether a building has energy-efficient appliances and light bulbs. Everybody wants to do their part,? Brachman said. He added that if there?s a choice between moving into an apartment project that has green features versus one that doesn?t, most people choose the former.

As developers, ?we all try to achieve as many green elements as we can, just to help preserve natural resources,? Brachman said. Another factor is that costs have come down on products like carpet and flooring made from recycled materials, he added. Some of that is due to federal tax credits intended to incentivize the production and use of green products.

The green apartment trend is not confined to market-rate and upscale complexes. Energy-efficient components and materials reduce occupants? costs and provide durability, which make them ideal for affordable housing complexes, said Sheldon Berg, an associate at Minneapolis-based DJR Architecture. Berg cited the example of Audubon Crossing, a 30-unit affordable housing complex his firm designed in northeast Minneapolis.

One product example is engineered flooring, which sometimes costs less than traditional hardwood flooring but provides similar high-quality appearance and durability. A one-eighth inch layer of hardwood covers a plywood base, instead of using 3 or 4 inches of solid hardwood.

Another durable but economical product is structural insulated panels ? a sandwich of high R-value foam insulation between two sheets of plywood ? which can be used for walls and roofs.

Today, there are green versions of just about every type of product manufactured to build and furnish housing, Berg noted. ?It?s become more of a collaboration among manufacturers, architects and developers.?

New Texas law gives veterans' spouses tax relief

Tens of thousands of spouses of totally disabled veterans in Texas will qualify for significant property tax relief under a new law taking effect Jan. 1. Texas law already exempts veterans who are declared 100 percent disabled because of combat injuries or other service-related causes from paying property taxes on their home. As of Jan. 1, that homestead exemption will also apply to their spouses after the veteran dies. The change will help some of those spouses, many living on fixed incomes, to keep their homes, said John Burkhardt of the Austin chapter of the Military Order of the Purple Heart veterans group. "Some of our veterans have owned their homes for many years and when they die, their spouse can get hit with huge bills," Burkhardt said. The disabled veterans measure is one of a handful of laws taking effect in 2012. Another provides new protections for homeowners who are late paying dues or fines to aggressive neighborhood associations that may try to foreclose on their property. Another law requiring Texas voters to show valid photo identification before casting a ballot is supposed to take effect in 2012. It remains on hold, however, while under review by the Justice Department to ensure it would not violate minority voting rights under the Voting Rights Act. The homestead exemption for disabled veterans' spouses required an amendment to the state Constitution, which was approved by voters in November. It won't come cheap. According to a Senate analysis, the exemption is estimated to cost state and local governments about $25 million in property taxes by 2016. Sen. Dan Patrick, R-Houston, one of the authors of the law, called that an insignificant budget impact when compared to the sacrifices made by the veterans and their families. "When they came back from war 100 percent disabled, that's a very special class of soldiers," Patrick said. "We're not talking about people living in million dollar houses. For the most part, we're talking about people trying to get by on military benefits." Texas has about 300,000 disabled veterans, and nearly 25,000 of them are designated as 100 percent service-related disabled, according to the Texas Veterans Commission. About 16,600 of those are between the ages of 55 and 75. The homestead exemption applies to the veterans' primary residence and expires if the surviving spouse remarries. The exemption moves with the surviving spouse to a new home if the home would be an equal or lesser dollar value compared to the old one. The new restrictions on homeowner associations require them to give homeowners three to 18 months to pay off late dues or fines. Homeowners also will be allowed to contact their association directly about their late payments, even if the association has retained an attorney or collection agent. The law also allows homeowners to prevent their association from using foreclosure if the ban is approved by two-thirds of its members. Another provision requiring associations to get a court order before foreclosing took effect Sept. 1. Homeowner advocates say they have been fighting for the protections for years. "This is the first time we got protection that had real teeth," said Harvella Jones, president of the Richmond, Texas-based National Homeowners Advocate Group.

'Twilight,' Nicki Minaj On 2012 Pop-Culture Wish List

Fans also tell MTV News they're looking forward to 'Dark Knight Rises' and hoping for new music from Lil Wayne.
By James Montgomery

As the last few hours of this glorious, Adele-ified year disappear, MTV News is turning its attention to the next 12 months, which promise to be full of big-time blockbuster films ("Avengers," "The Dark Knight Rises," "The Hunger Games") and even bigger-time celebrity events (Beyoncé and Jay-Z's baby, Britney's betrothal, Robert Pattinson doing something) — oh yeah, and there's also going to be a presidential election and the London Olympics and, potentially, the end of the world as we know it. So, basically, 2012 is totally going to smoke 2011.

But with so much to look forward to, what will be the event of the year? Well, we decided to take to the streets of New York's Times Square, where the big shiny ball will drop at the stroke of midnight, to find out what's topping your New Year's wish list.

"I'm most looking forward to hopefully seeing a Nicki Minaj tour," Adya Goswami said.

Alison Grant added, "My favorite is Lil Wayne, so I hope he puts something out again."

Of course, while we got plenty of folks clamoring for new music, we heard from even more who couldn't wait to check out the year's biggest movies — and from the sound of things, 2012 might very well be the year of the bat. Or the vampire.

"The new Batman movie coming out should be an awesome movie," Nick Stuart said.

Haley Race shared, "I'm really excited for the next 'Twilight' movie. I'm really a big fan. I've read the books like 40 times, each of them!"

And while "The Dark Knight Rises" and "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2" seem like sure bets, there are some New Year's wishes that may not come true in 2012. After all, you can't get everything you want.

" 'How to Make it in America': If that show gets put back on the air, that would be great," Steve Borrebach said.

Don't miss MTV's "NYE in NYC 2012," kicking off at 11 p.m. ET/PT (10 Central) tonight, New Year's Eve.
