(AP) ? The company that owns an oil platform that caught fire in the Gulf of Mexico has vowed to continue searching for a second missing worker after a body was recovered in the waters near the site.

The remains of the unidentified person were found Saturday night by divers hired by Houston-based Black Elk Energy, Coast Guard spokesman Carlos Vega said. Vega said the Coast Guard would be turning over the remains to local authorities. The Coast Guard has suspended its own search.

John Hoffman, the president and CEO of Black Elk Energy, has said the body is apparently one of two crew members missing since an explosion and fire on the oil platform Friday morning. Hoffman said the body was found by a contract dive vessel.

He wrote in an email Sunday morning that a second dive vessel has been brought in to speed up the search for the second missing worker.

"The workers impacted by this accident continue to be our primary focus," Hoffman wrote.

Hoffman said the body was found close to the leg of the platform, near where the explosion occurred, in about 30 feet of water. He said the missing men were employees of oilfield contractor Grand Isle Shipyard.

GIS CEO Mark Pregeant released a statement that the company has notified the family of those involved but was declining to release their names, according to WWL-TV in New Orleans.

Early Sunday, the Philippine Embassy in Washington said the worker whose body was recovered was Filipino, as are the worker who remains missing and four who have been hospitalized. The embassy declined to release names and expressed its condolences to the family of the dead worker.

The Coast Guard had suspended its own search earlier Saturday after 32 hours spent covering 1,400 square miles near the oil platform, located about 20 miles southeast of Grand Isle, La.

"We saw no signs of life. We have suspended the search... pending further development," Vega said.

Authorities have said the blaze erupted Friday morning while workers were using a torch to cut an oil line on the platform.

Pregeant's statement, however, said the cause of the fire and explosion is unknown and that "initial reports that a welding torch was being used at the time of the incident or that an incorrect line was cut are completely inaccurate."

Four other workers who were severely burned remained hospitalized Saturday night. Officials at Baton Rouge General Medical Center said two men were in critical condition Saturday, while two men were in serious condition. The four, being treated in a burn unit, are also employees of Grand Isle Shipyard and are from the Philippines.

After Friday's blaze, 11 people were taken by helicopter to area hospitals or for treatment on shore by emergency medical workers.

Grand Isle Shipyard employed 14 of the 22 workers on the platform at the time of the explosion, WWL-TV reported. A man who answered the phone at the company's Galliano, La., office on Saturday said no one was available to comment.

Separate from the explosion, Grand Isle Shipyard is facing a lawsuit by a group of former workers from the Philippines who claim they were confined to cramped living quarters and forced to work long hours for substandard pay. The lawsuit was filed in late 2011 in a Louisiana federal court and is pending. Lawyers for the company have said the workers' claims are false and should be dismissed.

Meanwhile, company officials said no oil was leaking from the charred platform, a relief for Gulf Coast residents still weary two years after the BP oil spill illustrated the risk that offshore drilling poses to the region's ecosystem and economy.

Black Elk released a statement saying that the platform wasn't operating and hadn't been since August.

Black Elk Energy is an independent oil and gas company. The company's website says it holds interests in properties in Texas and Louisiana waters, including 854 wells on 155 platforms.

Windows 8 Already Disappointing, Microsoft Blames PC Makers

CEO Steve Ballmer has already said that Microsoft sold 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in the first weekend after its debut, but it seems like sales of the new OS aren?t going exactly as expected.

Citing an insider, Paul Thurrott of Winsupersite.com writes that Windows 8 is already considered a disappointing product in the Redmond campus when it comes to sales.

Microsoft is yet to release any official sales figures, but executives have

already released optimistic sales projections, hinting that the company expects to ship millions of copies before year-end.

What?s more interesting, however, is that Microsoft blames PC makers for Windows 8?s disappointing sales performance, claiming that end users don?t have enough choices to buy Windows 8 devices.

The number of computers, laptops and tablets running Windows 8 is still small at this point, but several companies have already confirmed their plans to release such products in the near future.

This is actually another reason for Microsoft?s intentions to continue efforts in the hardware industry. By developing its own PC and devices, Microsoft would only have to rely on its own products when launching new software, but would also hurt sales of many other players in the hardware sector.

In addition, these disappointing yet unknown sales figures also bring Steven Sinofsky back in the spotlight. It?s not yet clear whether Sinofsky has left the company because of the slow Windows 8 sales, but more and more signs are suggesting that this was actually one of the reasons for the upper management shift within Microsoft.

Of course, critics could mention many reasons for Windows 8?s failure to impress, including the major changes in the GUI and the other often-considered ?confusing? elements, but it remains to be seen what the impact of all these changes is over the average end user.

Microsoft is yet to comment on the matter, but we?ve contacted the Redmondians, so we?ll get back to you when we receive an answer.

#UTAatWAS Game Stream -- Bullets Forever (SB Nation Blog) -- Jazz vs Wizards coverage

Player Focus: Randy Foye

X

Randy is our 6th man. He's our main weapon off the bench on offense, and usually finishes games for us. He gives us that added dimension of being an outside shooter, and he's been quite reliable so far this season (he's shooting 43.4 3pt%, which is second only to Paul Millsap 's astounding 58.8 3pt%). So far this season he is 3rd best in Offensive Win Shares. (Sap is first, Gordon Hayward is second). All that said, no one questioned his ability to hit spot up shots. He has been killed on defense. You may call it subjective, but he's been beaten down by Kobe Bryant types, all the way down to Danny Green types. Everyone scores on him. In fact, his defensive win shares are tied for worst on the team. The guys who have the same number of win shares on defense as him as Keven Murphy, Jeremy Evans, and Alec Burks. The main metric that seems to determine how much good you can do on offense and defense is playing time. Murphy, Evans, and Alec have played a grand total of 57 minutes this season. Randy? He has played 257 minutes.

Okay, so Randy isn't a great defender, so what else is new? I guess that's it. For the role of being a bomber off the bench who isn't good enough to start, he fits the role well (think Jason Terry / Jamaal Crawford). Those guys also set people up at times, or play 'some' defense. We haven't seen much from Foye besides shooting. He has played 257 minutes and has shot the ball 93 times. That means he shoots the ball every 2.76 minutes (2:46 in time units). As a point of comparison, Foye's one shot per 2.7 minutes of play is a stones throw away from Millsap's one shot per 2.6 minutes of play. Foye is shooting a lot.

I'm okay with that. I'm okay with his offense, and how he's a designated shooter. I'd love to see him add something else, like being a secondary distributor, or an average defender. Before he played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Randy played for the Washington Wizards. So this could be a revenge game. I hope he does well against Jordan Crawford and company.

Record scratch: Foye's starting tonight

(AP) ? A district attorney in upstate New York has admitted that he acted in pornographic movies in the 1970s, then lied when questioned about it during his second campaign.

Mark Suben, the DA in Cortland County near Syracuse since 2008, held a news conference Friday to say he had lied about his past in the days before this year's election.

"Recently materials have been circulated alleging that I was involved in the adult film industry about 40 years ago in New York. Those allegations are true," he said. "I was an actor in adult films for a short period in the early '70s. I was also an actor in other venues including off-Broadway, soap operas and commercial advertisements."

He apologized for his actions and said he used "bad judgment" by acting in porn and by lying about it. He wouldn't take questions, including whether he should resign. On his way out of the news conference, several people said, "You lied to me, Mark."

Suben's spokeswoman, Aimee Milks, said Suben will not resign.

"This was nearly 40 years ago. It was not illegal. Mark Suben was not yet married. He was not practicing law and he was not a law student," Milks said. "It has nothing to do with his law practice or his current position as the district attorney of Cortland County."

"I think the situation is really irrelevant to the campaign," she said. "His record as the DA for the last four years speaks for itself."

WSTM-TV in Syracuse published a story Friday that said Suben had acted under his name and the pseudonym Gus Thomas. That news story followed a posting on YouTube that compared images of Suben with Thomas.

"A few weeks ago, when asked, I denied this to members of the press," Suben said. "I regret that and I apologize for it. I was shocked and embarrassed to be confronted with this so many years later. I was embarrassed for my family and friends who have stood by me. I also denied my actions to my family, my friends and my staff."

The IMDB online database says Suben and Thomas are linked and classified as alternate names. The name Gus Thomas appears in films such as "Lecher" and "The Love Witch." Mark Suben appears in the credits for the non-pornographic 1976 movie "Angels."

His opponent in the Nov. 6 election, Cortland lawyer Keith Dayton, did not return a call from The Associated Press seeking comment, but he told the Syracuse Post-Standard he wasn't concerned about Suben's acting history.

"I think the more important part is the lying," he told the newspaper.

Suben has been an acting city court judge, city corporation counsel and a county attorney. He is past president of the Cortland County Bar Association. He graduated from the University of Rochester, the University of Wisconsin and Fordham Law School, according to the biography on his election website. The bio says he worked seven years as an assistant district attorney in Bronx County, then moved to Syracuse. He has taught criminal trial practice as an adjunct professor for 17 years at Syracuse University Law School.

Notre Dame research could improve sustainability and cost effectiveness of wastewater treatment

Notre Dame research could improve sustainability and cost effectiveness of wastewater treatment [ Back to EurekAlert! ] Public release date: 16-Nov-2012

University of Notre Dame

University of Notre Dame researcher Robert Nerenberg can tell you many things you might not know about wastewater treatment plants, including their significant carbon footprint, energy demands and chemical costs. His past research has addressed ways to drastically improve the energy efficiency of wastewater treatment. He now is telling the wastewater treatment industry about his promising new line of research that has the capability of significantly decreasing chemical costs and carbon footprint.

Nerenberg, an associate professor of civil and environmental engineering and earth sciences, points out that wastewater treatment plants are increasingly using a biologic nutrient removal (BNR) process to protect human health and the environment. This BNR process typically adds an external electron donor, or carbon source, such as methanol or ethanol. However, these chemicals are expensive, have toxicity and handling concerns, and can have a significant carbon footprint.

Nerenberg notes that gaseous electron donors have rarely been used in wastewater treatment because of their sparse solubility. However, a new biofilm reactor technology known as the membrane-biofilm reactor (MBfR) effectively delivers gaseous substances directly to the biofilm, bypassing the solubility problems. Hydrogen gas has been delivered to an MBfR to remove oxidized contaminants such as nitrate.

Nerenberg is studying the feasibility of using several inorganic or gaseous compounds, such as sulfur, sulfur dioxide, sulfite, hydrogen sulfite and methane, for delivery to MBfRs. Many of these compounds are waste products of other industries and can be much more cost effective and sustainable than the carbon compounds currently used in BNR processes. Elemental sulfur, for example, is a waste product from a number of industries, including oil refining and coal or gas-burning refining plants, and in many cases these industries would be happy to provide the sulfur for free to entities willing to remove it. The research thus also offers a means to transform a waste product into a valuable resource.

Nerenberg's research offers such promise that the Water Environment Research Foundation (WERF) Endowment for Innovation n Applied Water Quality Research awarded him its 2012 Paul L. Busch Award. The $100,000 award recognizes an outstanding individual whose ongoing efforts contribute significantly to water quality research and its practical application in the water environment.

The Busch Award Committee identified Nerenberg's work as feasible and able to demonstrate results and full-scale application quickly. Nerenberg will initially focus his research on sulfur and sulfur dioxide, which have the highest potential for immediate application. And he is already moving the research forward quickly with help from the Hampton Roads Sanitation District in Virginia, where preliminary denitrification tests have been conducted with sulfur and sulfur dioxide.

Nerenberg hopes the research will provide the basic information necessary to quickly develop treatment applications and help identify the most suitable reactor configurations, thereby dramatically decreasing operational costs and improving sustainability at wastewater treatment facilities.
