Starting today at noon, teams can begin building their 8 man practice squads. Which means its a good time to over exactly what that is again.
Who is eligible for practice squads?
Players who do no not have an accrued season of free agency credit or were not on an active gameday roster for more than 9 regular season games in a single accrued season. A player can also only be on a practice squad for 3 seasons.
How much does a practice squad player make?
The minimum is $5,700 per week, but there's no max. A team can pay a player whatever they like to entice him to be on their practice squad. However, those salaries do count against the cap.
Who can sign a practice squad player?
Pretty much anyone. A practice squad player is essentially a free agent and can sign almost anywhere at any time. The only exception is that he can not sign with his team's next opponent within 6 days of that week's game. If you do sign a player off a team's practice squad, he's guaranteed at least 3 weeks of salary whether he's on the roster or not.
In addition to signing practice squad guys, teams are also free to sign any player that passed through waivers after noon today as well.
