AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

AT&T's Eco-rating makes in-store debut alongside Pantech Renue

In February, at Mobile World Congress, AT&T announced a new program that would rate its various devices on their environmental-friendliness. Now that system is finally getting its in-store debut alongside the impressively green Pantech Renue. The Eco-ratings, which grade devices based on their use of recycled materials and toxic metals such as mercury and lead will give those more concerned with protecting the Earth than having the latest and greatest tech an easy way to determine the device that's right for them. Pantech for its part hopes the Renue, with its 67-percent recycled components and Energy Star-compliant charger will draw at least a few interested parties who wander in to AT&Ts shops. The rugged messaging device doesn't rock Jelly Bean, or any other smartphone OS for that matter, but it does have a slide out QWERTY keyboard for SMS addicts. Check out the video and PR after the break for more details.

Nassau Community College president Astrab resigns

Donald Astrab

The Nassau Community College Board of Trustees today approved a separation agreement with President Donald P. Astrab, accepting his resignation.

The board appointed Executive Vice President Kenneth Saunders to lead the school in his place while it searches for a new president.

The separation agreement, which the board approved by a 7-1 vote, gives Astrab 15 months pay, prevents him from suing the school and includes a non-disparagement clause. His contract called for 12 month severance.

School officials said the board of trustees and Astrab had philosophical differences and a different vision regarding the future of the college. Astrab is slated to go off of the payroll as of Aug. 31.

?It becomes a mathematical question,? spokesman Chuck Cutolo said. ?How much does the extra three months cost compared to the potential cost of litigation??

Astrab?s contract for a year is $230,000 with an additional $57,000 added for the three months, bringing the amount to nearly $300,000. He is entitled to a year of health insurance, valued at about $20,000. This adds another $6,000.

The board made Saunders the officer in charge, not an interim or acting president, since that position would have to be approved by SUNY. Saunders already makes $175,000 as executive vice president, but will make $215,000 in his new role.

As officer in charge, a position he can hold during a presidential search, Saunders is in charge of the administration. He or someone else could be named acting or interim president.

?I look forward to working with all segments of the campus and the Long Island community in advancing the mission of Nassau Community College of providing an affordable and accessible, higher education to our students and serving the region?s needs in a multiplicity of ways,? Saunders said in a written statement.

Board Chairman Geoffrey Prime said he looks forward to ?working with all segments of the campus and the Long Island community in advancing the mission of Nassau Community College of providing an affordable and accessible, higher education to our students and serving the region?s needs in a multiplicity of ways.?

Astrab arrived at NCC in November 2009 and officially became president in February 2010, leading the passage of college budgets that he believed restrained spending in light of state and county financial problems.

Amid a tight budget, Astrab didn?t renew temporary contracts of nearly 40 full-time faculty, which widened a rift between him and the faculty, who saw decisions as being made without the school?s traditional shared governance.

?The faculty argued they did not reach out enough to them as part of the decision making process,? Cutolo said. ?Dr. Astrab believed that he had.?

The school has nearly 24,000 students, making it the largest single-campus community in New York state, while Suffolk County Community College is larger, including three campuses. Although Nassau Community College?s tuition rose $258 last year, it is being held flat for the 2012-2013 academic year at $3,990.

Pros and Cons of Outsourcing Offshore

If you have called a major company?s customer service lately, than you know that many companies from the United States have been turning to outsourcing as a way to cut the cost of doing business. Offshore Company Experts report record numbers of businesses choosing to outsource internationally. If you are wondering about outsourcing and thinking that it may be a good option for your company, than there are many aspects to consider.

The Pros Of Outsourcing

One of the biggest pros of outsourcing is the cost. The cost of outsourcing your customer service, marketing, software or database projects can be half or even 2/3 of what you would spend for the same service in the US. You also don?t have to pay the employment taxes, training or facilities costs associated with conducting these operations stateside.

Another major advantage is that many outsourcing countries have college-educated populations. The Philippines for example, 83% of the population speaks English and 47.9% of the population has attained a Bachelor degree or higher. Other countries including India, China, and Pakistan offer the same benefits at significant cost savings to your business.

The Cons of Outsourcing

One of the biggest cons that businesses report is the loss of control. Many executives initially find it very difficult to release control of their customer service, marketing, or other services to managers in remote locations. Once the lines of communications between offshore managers and executives are well established, many businesses are very pleased with the business relationship, but the initial transition is often a difficult one.

The time difference is another issue that is often reported as a struggle. For example, if it is 11pm on Sunday in New York, it is 8 am on Monday in India. This means if you are outsourcing to India, you have to be very aware of the time difference and be willing to conduct business at unusual hours.

Making a Decision

Talking to Offshore Company Experts is a great place to start when figuring out if outsourcing is right for you. There are many pros and cons to weigh and the answer is different for every company. Talk to an expert in order to figure out if outsourcing internationally is right for you.

Rare Diseases: 5 Recent Reasons to Cheer

On Sunday morning, July 21, I faced a room of people from families with Leber congenital amaurosis (LCA), an inherited blindness caused by mutations in any of at least 18 genes. It was the final session of the Foundation for Retinal Research?s bi-annual LCA family conference, and I was there to discuss the history of gene therapy. But I zapped through that quickly, because the future is much more intriguing.

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens? hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Troy Stevens)

Exome sequencing identified the rare mutation that causes Gavin Stevens? hereditary blindness (Leber congenital amaurosis, or LCA). (Jennifer Stevens)

The excitement pervading the room that day was palpable, following a day of scientific updates, and not only because those with young children were soon to visit Sesame World and the sights of Philadelphia.

Jennifer and Troy Stevens exemplified that hope. Two years earlier, at this conference, they?d learned that researchers had been unable to identify a mutation behind their toddler Gavin?s blindness. Now they know the name of their gene: NMNAT1. I?ll return to their story.

The star of the 2010 conference had been 10-year-old Corey Haas and an energetic young sheepdog, both cured of LCA with gene therapy. This weekend, the stars were the new programs and technologies that would allow other families to join Corey?s ? and not just those with blindness.

The rare disease community in the US collectively belies its name: at least 30 million people suffer from 7,000+ diseases, many so rare that they hover beneath the radar of big pharma. But maybe not for long, thanks to the following recent reasons to cheer:

#1: GENE THERAPY PENDING APPROVAL

On July 20, the European Medicines Agency (EMA) announced impending first approval of a gene therapy in the western world.

It?s for lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD). The enzyme normally breaks down tiny triglyceride-packed globules called chylomicrons, and its absence causes episodes of very painful pancreatitis that can be fatal. LPLD is an ultra-rare disease, striking 1-2 people per million. And the only treatment is a diet so low in fat that most patients can?t stick to it.

The gene therapy, Glybera, consists of adeno-associated virus type 1 delivering an overactive variant of the LPL gene, injected into a leg muscle during a single day. But not many people have had it.

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

James Wilson, MD, PhD, developed the vector, AAV1, used in the lipoprotein lipase deficiency gene therapy. (University of Pennsylvania).

The research team, led by Daniel Gaudet, MD, PhD, a professor of medicine at the University of Montreal, with colleagues from Amsterdam Molecular Therapeutics (recently replaced by privately-held UniQure), reported a two-year follow-up of 14 adult patients receiving 100 billion to 1 trillion viruses. And it seems to have worked, depending upon how one assesses success.

?The triglycerides dropped, but after 60 days they trended back up. The primary endpoint had failed, but the secondary endpoint was recurring episodes of pancreatitis ? and they found a statistically significant, or close to it, decrease,? explained James Wilson, MD, PhD, editor-in-chief of Human Gene Therapy and professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the University of Pennsylvania, who developed the vector. Tracking a few more patients, work not yet published, may have led the EMA?s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use to finally recommend approval, after three rejections.

Tomas Salmonson, MD, acting chair of the committee, points to the new data as well as restricting use to the sickest patients in pushing the gene therapy forward. ?Our established ways of assessing the benefits and risks of Glybera were challenged by the extreme rarity of the condition and also by uncertainties associated with data provided.?

For the additional study, the researchers looked at what was happening in the chylomicrons in the blood, and found that triglyceride level can fluctuate, contrary to assumptions of steady change. And that means something is happening that might explain the decrease in the painful episodes ? a very real measurement. Summed up Jean Bennett, MD, PhD, leader of one of the LCA2 clinical trials at Penn, ?It?s a huge vote of confidence for the entire field of gene transfer.?

Dr. Wilson agrees. The repercussions won?t be at the FDA, where scientists make decisions based on data, he said, but on the willingness of big pharma to invest in gene therapy. Despite recent successes ? LCA2, hemophilia, adrenoleukodystrophy ? the pharmaceutical industry has been hesitant to fund gene therapy because it has lacked an approval. ?So-called regulatory uncertainty has been the biggest problem, and if there?s no precedent, they can continue to say no. Biopharma is not interested in the ultra orphans. But I have a feeling we?ll be seeing some activity,? he added.

#2: FINDING HOMES FOR STALLED DRUGS

By August 14, researchers can submit pre-applications to the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) Discovering New Therapeutic Uses for Existing Molecules program. The idea is simple yet brilliant: match compounds that are languishing on company shelves to diseases with newly-discovered mechanisms. Such candidate drugs have passed initial safety tests but were dropped for business reasons, such as a tiny market, or because they didn?t treat what they were intended to.

Corey Haas and Hannah Sames are ambassadors for the rare disease community, here signing their photos in ?The Forever Fix: Gene Therapy and the Boy Who Saved It.? Corey has LCA2, successfully treated with gene therapy, and Hannah, awaiting hers, is one of 54 people in the world who has giant axonal neuropathy. (Sandy Andersen)

Since the announcement in June, eight industry leaders have signed on, offering an initial 58 compounds to find new therapeutic homes. And the need is compelling: of the 4,500+ diseases with recently-revealed mechanisms, only about 250 have treatments. ?If researchers funded through this effort can demonstrate new uses for the compounds, they could significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to get a treatment to patients in need,? said Kathy L. Hudson, PhD, NCATS acting deputy director.

Everyone wins.

#3: SPEEDING FDA APPROVAL

On July 9, President Obama signed into law the FDA Safety and Innovation Act, which updates the 1983 Orphan Drug Act. The new law provides $6 billion over the next 5 years to assist the agency in evaluating new drugs and medical devices. The Act will speed access to new treatments and development of especially promising ones, and the Humanitarian Use Devices program will target those that treat rare diseases, giving priority to diseases of children. ?Treatments are desperately needed because most are serious, many are life-threatening, and about two-thirds of the patients are children,? said Peter L. Saltonstall, president and CEO of the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), which was critical in developing both acts.

The Act may be a lifesaver for people such as 8-year-old Hannah Sames, one of 54 people in the world known to have giant axonal neuropathy. The gene therapy trial that she will take part in is nearing phase 1, but the sponsoring not-for-profit, Hannah?s Hope Fund, is about to run out of money.

#4: EASING INSURANCE ACCESS

When the Supreme Court upheld the Affordable Care Act on June 28, I scrolled through the relieved statements from various rare disease organizations. Thanks to the ACA, children like Hannah Sames and Gavin Stevens will not be penalized for their pre-existing conditions, nor face annual or lifetime insurance caps.

#5: IDENTIFYING DISEASE GENES

Exome sequencing can identify mutations when single-gene tests don?t. The strategy sequences the protein-encoding part of the human genome in individuals, usually young children, whose syndrome has evaded recognition, searching for mutations passed silently from parents, with functions that could explain the symptoms. Once that?s known, researchers can develop new treatments, or repurpose existing ones.

New exome-derived discoveries are being reported nearly weekly, some appearing in the media before the technical papers are published. A recent news release about a 4-year-old named Maya with a neurological disease, for example, made its way into many news reports and blogs, with a touching story and accolades. Yet none named the gene or its precise function ? the part I?m most interested in.

In contrast to the incomplete Maya story, when John Chiang, PhD, director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory at the Casey Eye Institute in Portland, Oregon told me he?d discovered Gavin Stevens? mutation among nearly 2,500 gene variants in the blind boy?s exome, he asked that I not report it. That was 8 months ago ? the mutation is unveiled in a quartet of papers in the current Nature Genetics, after something of a turf war among four research groups.

Gavin?s parents had heard about Dr. Chiang at the Foundation for Retinal Research meeting two years ago, where Jennifer had called him, distraught, after learning that single-gene tests couldn?t explain their son?s blindness. Dr. Chiang, who described his skill as ?I do the dirty work, I find the mutations,? had helped several families after existing tests had fruitlessly, but expensively, probed the most common parts of only the most common genes. Dr. Chiang had first developed larger gene testing panels, and when those still didn?t identify some families? mutations, quietly sent their DNA off to the Beijing Genome Institute for whole exome sequencing.

Now that exome sequencing is commercially available in the U.S., Dr. Chiang cautions that it still doesn?t help all families, and that costs can greatly exceed the oft-mentioned $1,000 pricetag when considering analysis. ?I would only recommend it as the last resort when all known genes are ruled out,? he advised.

On Saturday at the retinal research conference last weekend, I watched Jennifer and Troy beam as Eric Pierce, MD, PhD, director of the Ocular Genomics Institute in Boston and co-author of one of the Nature Genetics papers, talked about their mutation. Discovery of the gene, which affects cellular energy (NAD synthesis), is a starting point for gene therapy, and this particular candidate is a great target. ?The gene is small, and encodes an enzyme,? said Dr. Pierce.

The next day, as my talk about the history of gene therapy wound down, I took stock of my audience. Two young women with canes sat in the front row. A few rows back sat Karen Poulakos, also with a cane, whom I?d chatted with earlier.

Karen has Corey?s disease, LCA2, but, at age 63, had been deemed too old for the gene therapy clinical trial two years ago. But things had changed, she?d learned at the meeting, and she just might be eligible for the phase 3 trial coming up. Karen has lived a full life in her world of shadows, barely remembering when she could see better, and she?s now contemplating what it might be like to see again.

As I collected my things, I marveled at the hope radiating from the faces in the room, sighted as well as not. And I thought that this is science at its very best. This is what it is all about, the molecules, the mice, the deciphering of nature?s mechanisms: helping people.

224-year-old Rhode Island general store closing

LITTLE COMPTON, R.I. (AP) -- Gray's Store in Adamsville village brought in customers for years with its old-fashioned marble soda fountain, cigar and tobacco cases, and Rhode Island johnny cakes.

The 224-year-old business may be the oldest operating general store in America, although others have staked similar claims. The Rhode Island store near the Massachusetts line opened in 1788. Now owners say this year is its last.

Gray's is set to close Sunday afternoon.

Owner Jonah Waite inherited the shop after his father died of cancer last month. He said Saturday it was a hard decision to close the store and leave behind all the history, but the shop's finances aren't sustainable and a supermarket down the street has siphoned away business.

Waite, 21, who will be a senior at the University of Hartford in Connecticut in the fall, also is consumed with pursuing a career in sports journalism.

"Obviously, I understand the historical aspect of it, and I would really love to keep it the way it is, but it doesn't seem to me that that's the most feasible option," Waite said. "With the economy ... the place has lost its attraction, lost its luster."

Waite said he's not sure yet if he will keep the property or try to sell it.

The shop features general store standards like penny candy and a small selection of groceries, as well as antiques and collectible knickknacks. It's been in Waite's family for seven generations, since 1879, and comprises the front part of the family's home.

He said his father, Grayton Waite, who was 59 when he died June 11, enjoyed selling cigars and candy. His great grandfather owned the store in the early 1900s and ran a gristmill to make his own corn meal that he sold in the store.

In 2007, U.S. Sen. Jack Reed and then-Gov. Donald Carcieri issued proclamations naming Gray's as the oldest continuously run general store in the country.

More customers than usual have been gathering at Gray's in recent days to say farewell and share memories, Waite said.

Bob Wordell, a mechanic down the street, remembers gathering at the store in the summer with his friends when he was a child years ago.

"We'd eat freeze pops on the front steps," Wordell told The Providence Journal. "I think they cost a nickel."

Waite said it's been hard dealing with the store and coping with his father's death at such a young age. But he believes his father would support what he's doing. He said his father intended to sell the property after he got sick to pay medical bills and retire.

"He's trusting that I'll do the right thing and what's best for me," Waite said.

The Advantages of Outsourcing In Little Businesses | Arty Apt

Prior to we are able to begin discussing the rewards of outsourcing specially in smaller firms we ought to fully fully grasp what outsourcing is and what outsourcing is just not (as lots of people normally confuse it with off-shoring, an equivalent but distinctive thing).

So what?s outsourcing? A relatively current addition to organization terminology, outsourcing in an enterprise may be the delegation of particular non-core operations to other separate entities that specialize in these operations. Put very simply, outsourcing suggests giving away certain tasks which though imperative towards the actual enterprise, may be superior managed by another sector which specializes in that process.

Outsourcing entails transferring management control and choice generating power to the other business too. This suggests that there is a lot far more interaction, and info exchange, coordination and trust amongst the outsourcer and its client, generating it distinctive from the established buyer-seller relationship.

Now that we?ve established what outsourcing is, let?s focus on what it is not. Outsourcing is typically confused to off shoring, which is the relocation of an entire or element of a functional unit from the enterprise to yet another nation, no matter whether it stay in that business?s control or not. Outsourcing is normally restricted domestically. In quite a few situations, which include telemarketing, the business wishes to employ the service of overseas contact centers. Thus when outsourcing crosses national borders it can be named offshore outsourcing.

So why must businesses outsource? There are many positive aspects of outsourcing, specifically for compact businesses. The main purpose for outsourcing could be the cut in charges, as they do not must deliver advantages to their workers, and have fewer overhead costs to be concerned about. Many companies favor offshore outsourcing, because it makes it possible for them to use the low labor fees of countries for example India and China. Not just that, the somewhat high exchange rates in these nations tends to make offshore outsourcing more advantageous. In India, the dollar exchange rate is 45 rupees per every single American dollar. Therefore the typical American worker who would take (for e.g) $5 per hour will be replaced by an Indian worker employed at $2/hour.

Outsourcing also permits smaller firms to focus on core competencies, and relieve themselves from the peripheral ones. Therefore they can concentrate on delivering better excellent goods and service. Even when the quality doesn?t increase, the cut in expense allows for higher productivity. This increases the overall economic climate in total. Not just that, the business can produce good high quality merchandise devoid of having to employ a large amount of persons. Therefore lowering their overall labor charges and employee benefit.

The very best facet of outsourcing even though is definitely the capability to employ experts to get the operate performed. In regions for instance marketing and telemarketing, it truly is commonly extra cost powerful, and productive to hand more than the activity to a separate corporation and spend them accordingly. Therefore instead of handling their very own affairs in a substandard manner, they can employ pros to carry out the approach efficiently and proficiently. And when the outsourcing company is assured that its client is managing perfectly, it can concentrate on building greater merchandise and services.

For small companies, outsourcing permits them to work using the minimum of labor and equipment expenditure. As an example, a compact firm outside city limits can outsource its transport, thus producing it unnecessary for it to acquire buses, cutting the price of fuel and saving its resources. A different prime example is telemarketing and advertising. Several companies favor to outsource this facet of marketing and advertising to skilled contact centers and marketing agencies, therefore eliminating the want to form an whole unit devoted to this task. Not merely that, but simply because the outsourcing client features a fully established infrastructure devoted particularly towards the service offered, there?s no necessity for a small business to invest in developing its own internal infrastructure to accommodate that service.

In compact corporations there?s only a restricted access to resources and tips. Outsourcing allows the small business to garner new ideas and innovations. It could also result feasible cash influx because of the transfer of assets to the new provider

The nation's weather

Weather Underground Forecast for Friday, July 27, 2012.

The Eastern US will see more showers and thunderstorms on Friday, as a frontal boundary lingers over the region. A low pressure system moves eastward and away from the Northeastern US, but continues pushing a cold front southeastward throughout the day. The system will move from the Ohio River Valley and Mid-Mississippi River Valley into the Southeast stretching from the Mid-Atlantic states into the Lower Mississippi River Valley. Additional moisture and energy from the Gulf of Mexico will feed into this system, allowing for widespread showers and thunderstorms to develop. There is a slight chance of severe thunderstorm development in these areas with damaging winds and large hail likely. These storms are not expected to be as severe as the heavy rain and thunderstorms that developed across the Northeast on Thursday.

In the West, monsoonal moisture lingers over the Southern and Central Rockies, kicking up more widespread showers and thunderstorms. In the Northern Plains, an area of low pressure will develop over the Intermountain West and move through the Northern Rockies. This will kick up scattered storms throughout the day. Severe thunderstorm development is not anticipated for the Western US. Meanwhile, the rest of the West Coast remains under high pressure with sunny, dry, and warm conditions. Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Thursday have ranged from a morning low of 33 degrees at West Yellowstone, Mont. to a high of 105 degrees at Needles, Calif.

Methods Indians can use to earn extra money from the Internet ...

I am thinking of writing an article series which can be used as a guide to earn money from web sites. I am going to share the series 100% free, with the readers of this site.? But before, I expend considerable amount of time and effort, I have to know if the readers are willing to read such a series, if they are interested in knowing more about the topic. To this end, I have created a simple poll, if the number of ?Yes? vote is more than the ?No? votes, I will write the series.

Vote here

I know there are millions of articles out there which claim to show you the way, but the problems I saw with most of them are

1. They do not take Indian conditions in to account.

2. They are too spread out and hap hazard

3. Many contains out dated or wrong information

4. Many articles out there are used as a bait to scam people in to buying something, like an ebook.

5. Many skip vital steps and do not provide the real picture of what a person needs to do or goes through before they can even see a single paisa.

Why I think, I am qualified to write such a series?

1. I am building websites since 2001.

2. I started earning money by promoting websites from 2002.

3. Since 2003, I am running a company that is doing business online.

Why I want to write such a series and share it for free?

Manning Era begins in Denver with packed camp

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) ? Peyton Manning jogged onto the practice field to a loud roar from a record crowd as the Denver Broncos opened training camp at their Dove Valley complex Thursday morning.

It was the first chance for the public to see the four-time MVP in a Broncos uniform. He was released by the Indianapolis Colts after 14 seasons in March. He missed all of last season with a nerve problem in his neck.

With Manning replacing Tim Tebow, expectations are high for the Broncos, who haven't posted a winning record since 2006.

Right guard Chris Kuper and running back Knowshon Moreno, coming off broken legs, both participated in the workout that drew more than 3,300 fans, the most at a practice since the team moved training camp here in 2003.

Toyota regains top global auto sales spot, with VW in pursuit

(Reuters) - Toyota Motor Corp regained the lead in global car sales over General Motors Co in the first half, with Volkswagen AG poised to move past GM and push the U.S. automaker into third place for the full year.

The bigger question is how soon the German auto giant also will pass Toyota and secure the global sales crown ? an internal goal that VW management has targeted for 2018 as part of the company's so-called Strategie 18.

VW, in a cautious statement released Thursday, said: "The Volkswagen Group is right on track for 2018, but has not crossed the finish line yet. For us, quality takes precedence over quantity. We don't want to be the biggest, but rather the best and most sustainable automaker in the world. For us, environmentally friendly products and satisfied customers and employees are at least as important as sales rankings and profitability."

It still has to maneuver past a resurgent Toyota, which has rebounded smartly from the effects of last year's earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Toyota in February said it expects to sell a record 9.58 million vehicles globally in 2012, shattering the old mark of 9.37 million in 2007.

Toyota had held the global sales crown from 2008 through 2010, before the natural disasters in Japan dropped it last year to third place, behind GM and VW.

"We have recovered greatly from the earthquake and tsunami," said Javier Moreno, a spokesman for New York-based Toyota North America. "Our dealers now have plenty of inventory and showroom traffic is up on a global basis."

Toyota said it sold 4.97 million vehicles worldwide in the first six months, a substantial increase from the 3.72 million it sold last year, when all Japanese automakers were reeling from the earthquake's aftermath.

GM said it sold 4.67 million vehicles in the first half, up 3.0 percent from 4.54 million the previous year. GM's global performance was driven by record first-half sales in China, which now accounts for more than 30 percent of the automaker's worldwide total. The U.S. market, where GM's sales are growing at a much slower pace, accounts for only 28 percent of the company's total sales.

GM spokesman James Cain on Wednesday said: "We continue to grow our sales and share in China . . . We are in the early days of the most aggressive roll out of new products in our history, which will help us press our advantage in the U.S. and China and grow profitably around the world."

VW, in a mid-year company report released Thursday, said its first-half sales totaled 4.64 million, up 12.4 percent from 4.13 million last year. But the German auto giant, which recently added sports-car maker Porsche to a diversified brand portfolio that also includes heavy-truck makers MAN and Scania, sounded a note of restraint.

"Deliveries by the Volkswagen Group developed very well in the first half of the year," sales boss Christian Klingler told reporters earlier this month. "But that is by no means cause for euphoria. The economic situation, particularly in Western Europe, remains tense and difficult."

Klingler added: "We remain on track and are entering the second half (of the) year, which will be altogether more challenging, with confidence."

A renewed focus on the U.S. market is part of VW's long-range plan to boost global sales to more than 10 million units by 2018, with the United States contributing at least 10 percent of that volume.

Tom Libby, senior automotive analyst with Southfield, Michigan-based R.L. Polk, said VW's management "has been very aggressive, with the U.S. playing a significant role in their global growth strategy. They have become more competitive on pricing here, and we expect their sales and share will continue to rise."

Interior Design: Helping You Find Your Harmony | ej-fransen.com

You come home, you?re stressed with your job, you?re stressed with the cat, and you?re pretty much stressed about everything right now because it?s been one of those days. The last thing you want to come home to is a sink full of dishes and a disorganised living space. Don?t even look at ?that? table you hate. A lot of people might not realise it, but your living space is extremely important to the functionality of the rest of your life.

Take?Horizon Media ? New York?as an example; they?ve been voted No. 5 in the World?s best office interiors. They wanted a new office space to bring their staff together and increase interaction; so they had the vision and took the leap. With their improved working space, they were a lot happier in their roles and you whilst your workplace may not be so invested, you can transform your living space.

Think Feng Shui ? It was originally used to orient buildings, but seeing as you can?t change how your house has been built now, you can completely focus on turning the inside into your own personal haven.

Where do you start?

If you want to tackle your whole house, then so be it. But don?t stress yourself too much by taking too much on at a time. A good first step is starting with whichever room is your living room or perhaps even a family room:

  • Where to start? Start with the room you spend most time in.

So you?ve got your first task, deciding on a place to start is often stressful. A lot of people decorating or changing their homes often ask whether I think it?s beneficial enough to bring in a professional to decorate your home. This brings me to my next step:

  • Will you complete this by yourself/with a partner or will you need outside help?

Be honest with yourself: If you make a start on this alone, will you see it through to the end? Your inner harmony isn?t going to be settled by a room or task half finished; it will just end in frustration.

It?s important to know what it will cost. Do not stress yourself if you cannot afford the wallpaper you want; research a cheaper alternative. Do not of course mistake this with compromising on your vision, but in the real world, you need to keep within confines of a budget so you can ensure you finish your room.

  • Colour schemes and lay outs

You need to have a vision, and hopefully your budget has put this in perspective for you. Choosing a colour scheme should only come after you have decided on the room and looked at your budget. After all you probably wouldn?t decorate your bathroom in the same colours as your bedroom. Don?t change colour choices half way through or you may end up with a confused scheme at the end.

How do you carry on?

You?ve hit a brick wall, maybe not a literal one; the vision you started with deserted you last night and you?re back to unsettled and unhappy in your home.

  • Get back on track ? remember why you were completing this in the first place

Remember the night you came home and decided you needed a change? Remember that the wall colour was driving you to tears? Focus is your number one goal during the re-invention; focus on the reasons for the change and persevere with the project. Maybe now is the time to call in the help or the cavalry.

  • Is it time for professional help?

Have you lost your vision? Is it time to bring in those art consultants or the Feng Shui guys who do this for a living? Again, be honest with yourself; you?re not failing by needing help, and you can?t sit your guests in the Kitchen for the rest of your life.

  • Add your finishing touches

No one can force you to finish your project, but by staying focused and being methodical you should now be arriving at putting in your finishing touches. Whether you got in the art consultancy to help or not, you can put in your own personal touches now in the form of furniture or art work. This may be the time you want to get in an interior designer to help you look for the best pieces. Make your hard work sing louder by stamping your mark on the room

You?ve finished after days, weeks or maybe months of hard work. Harmonious living areas will help your general well-being, and why not? The time we don?t spend at work we spend at home, so comfort and happiness is important in your surroundings. Just try not to change your mind when you watch the home improvement programs and decide you prefer that lilac to the natural?colors?you?ve spent 3 months working on.

Jaguar Motors Ltd the British luxury auto maker arose from humble beginnings of high-end aluminum motorcycle side car carriages. Though advanced for its day ? for motorcycles few could have ever guessed that small oversize garage size enterprise could have grown into this kind of world class maker of luxury automobilesYet it absolutely was these simple sidecars that provided the funding, cash flow and profit to allow the budding firm to move from the smaller original premises with a larger building plus much more advanced facility. Thus the then Swallow Sidecar Company could undertake the next step in its growth and evolution that being the key crossover for the production from simple side cars to train building. Swallow Sidecar evolved and expanded in name as well towards the new Swallow Sidecar and Coachbuilding Company also. The Jaguar name change came later as soon as the post war period for marketing reasons particularly in light from the American export market. It seemed that upper management deemed that in america the brand S.S. (Swallow Sidecar abbreviation) may not be one of the most marketing brand that growing sales inside the vital post war US luxury auto market. The Swallow coach product was rather appreciated inside British Isles auto market as a popular and affordable mainstream product ? roughly depending on the Austin 7 model then the popular coach label of vehicles on British roads plus the English auto market. The initial Swallow Seven (an appealing variation of the Austin 7 name which can not of been allowed in the current brand conscious market where names and designations are jealously the turf of the several auto manufactures?), was a two seater, aluminum metal open body including a handsome cowled radiator whose owner was also furnished with a fresh and novel innovation contained in the package ?hard top?. You are able to count 1924 because year of introduction in the Swallow Seven model run.Interestingly, the automobile was obviously a hybrid of different auto makers first actual Austin motor cars chassis. However as sales volumes from the Sevens increased along with reputation and resulting sales popularity of the merchandise to the point where Austin itself (an important auto manufacturer in great britain at the time) can?t match painting enough auto chassis bodies to produce Swallow?s demands and requirements. Totally marketing & production mix that certain of Britain?s most solid & prestigious auto dealer negotiated a hallmark volume deal of no less than 500 vehicles, such as the provision of way to obtain a distinctive sedan version with the Swallow 7 auto & arrived to upscale the Swallow Company?s production & manufacturing capabilities with new & enhanced facilities. The major determinant within the move became getting a availability of the most skilled labor. The sole spot to locate during the time emerged to be the British ?Midlands?"For much more details about ??Edmonton new cars?", you need to pay a visit to: Edmonton new cars? Thus it may be said boldly that for reasons of a shortage of skilled labor that the world famous British luxury auto Jaguar was positioned in Coventry with out where else in the uk. This developed to get the main & primary reason that Jaguar?s famous base of operations was Coventry and nowhere else. Ah the twists of fate that Coventry became renowned worldwide because the home of the classic luxury British automotive car product ? ?Jaguar?.

Supermarkets & Store Accidents ? Can You Make an Injury Claim ...

July 24, 2012

It happens all the time: A customer enters a store, hits a slippery spot, and takes a tumble.? Some falls are minor, but many others result in serious injuries that lead to significant medical bills, lost work, rehabilitation, and considerable pain and suffering.?? Those hurt in this and similar ways often wonder if they have a legal claim to seek compensation for their losses.slip and fall in Jacksonville

In many cases the answer is ?Yes.?

Slip and Fall Accidents

Most accidents in supermarkets, clothing stores, and other retail spaces are of the ?slip and fall? variety.? Potential legal accountability following these accidents is guided by an area of law known as ?premise liability.?? This refers to rules about what the owners and operators of a building are required to do to keep those on the property safe and secure.? In general, owners must take ?reasonable? steps to ensure the premises are safe for customers.? When they fail to meet that duty, they can be held liable for the harm that results.

Negligent Store Owners

A personal injury lawyer can explain how negligence might be proven in your individual case.? Many different factors may be involved depending on the exact way that you were hurt while in the store.? Some of the most common examples of negligence include:

? Wet floors: When floors are mopped, customers should be warned that the space is slippery and presents a hazard.? ?Caution Wet Floor? signs should be used.? Similarly, if there is a spill on the floor, the business must quickly clean the location to prevent unsuspecting customers from getting hurt.

? Insecure Shelving: Store shelves and items on the shelves should never fall onto a customer.? Businesses must ensure shelves will not tip and that merchandise on the shelves does not tumble down.

? Rough floors/walkways: Uneven sidewalks, potholes, large entrance drops, loose rugs, and other hazards on the premises might present unreasonable dangers to those coming to the business.? It is important for these establishments to take reasonable steps to eliminate these fall and injury risks.

Proving the Negligence

Any time that you are hurt while on business property you may be able to recover for your losses. A legal professional can explain the various parties who could be held liable for the harm suffered, including the store owner, a property manager, parent companies, and sometimes vendors or contractors working within the establishment.

In a potential legal case following the accident, it will be important to collect evidence that can help prove negligence on the part of the owner or operator.? Evidence in these cases often includes pictures of the area where the accident took place or surveillance video footage of the actual fall.? Statements from witnesses who saw the fall or the state of the store at the time of the incident are crucial.? In addition, employee statements can be pivotal.? For example, if a floor was wet, potential liability may hinge on whether or not an employee was near the area and saw it or had the chance to correct the problem.

Get Legal Help

No two cases are identical.? At the end of the day, if you are hurt in any way while at a store, be sure to get in touch with a legal professional as soon as possible to share your story.? The injury lawyer can explain how the law might apply, collect necessary evidence, and work on your behalf to ensure a timely, fair resolution to the legal matter.

Evening Barbecue ~ Fresh Bites

Second in Allrecipes? series of guest bloggers writing about their personal Recipes for Happiness, Michele King is president and the creative force behind the Gaga Goody Company, an online gourmet treat business. Her romance with food inspired her to launch her own blog, Blog.gagagoody.com, to share her insights into the world of food and entertaining. Allrecipes met her in June 2012 at the BlogHer Food conference in Seattle. In her own words, she says: ?I love to cook and enjoy experimenting with new recipes all the time. My original recipes are grounded in the traditional American cuisine I grew up with in Chicago?s western suburbs, meshed with deep Southern influences from Mississippi and Louisiana based on my parents? background. After becoming an adult, living in three states, and interacting with a multitude of different cultures, these experiences helped shape the cook I am today. I love entertaining, and what better way to do it than with food, drink, and amazing company??

For me, summertime means backyard barbeques and friends conversing over a glass of wine. In a fast-paced world of texting and instant messaging, it feels good to put technology to rest in exchange for an evening of good old-fashioned face time. I still have ample respect for formal invitations and stationary, but in a universe where everyone spreads themselves so thin, making time to nourish your friendships is vital.

So, on this day, I prepared a menu that included something for everyone. I have friends whom do not eat beef or pork, so I decided to go with chicken as my safety. My one friend Tiffany loves turkey sausage and she pretty much twisted my arm to make sure I grill some. Luckily for her, it was on sale and I wanted to see how it would cook up on the grill, so everyone wins. With it being over ninety degrees the last few days, there was no way in the world I was going to bake anything. Plus, more of my friends are trying to do better with their eating habits, so having barbeque and a heavy dessert was not an option. Although I am decidedly team carnivore, I do enjoy fresh salads loaded with vegetables and wanted to make sure I had some offerings that were meatless so that all my guests could enjoy the evening and leave with a full belly.

Menu

Barbequed Chicken

Italian Turkey Sausage

Grilled Corn-on the Cob

Fruit

Garden Salad

Pasta Salad

White Wine

We feasted on delicious fruits such as peaches, cherries, and green grapes in the summer heat. What?s not to love about sweet and juicy peaches? Just rinse and serve for a great way to begin or end your meal. I added a nice leafy salad filled to the rim with vegetables and a homemade poppy seed dressing I found on one of my favorite websites, Allrecipes.com.

For my pasta salad, I kept it simple, using two cups of tri-colored rotini pasta, prepared as instructed by packaging. I then cut broccoli, two celery stalks, and two cups cherry tomatoes into bite-size portions. The broccoli and celery I cooked in water until tender, drained, and then mixed with the cherry tomatoes and pasta. Finally, I added a cup of Italian salad dressing and mixed it in well with a big spoon.

On the grill, I prepared corn-on-the-cob. I drizzled the corn with olive oil and melted butter, and then seasoned it with Northern Italian seasoning and kosher salt. Finally, I wrapped the corn in aluminum foil and grilled it.

For the chicken, I used kosher salt, pepper, lemon pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning. As you can see by now, I love Italian seasoning for its versatility. It is a kitchen must! I also found a great sauce for my barbeque on Allrecipes.com. It is just such a good resource and you can always mix things up to make them your own.

Great food, good wine, and the heat is beginning to ease up. What more can you ask for on a sunny day? My advice to any hostess would be to do your grilling and prep work the day before so you can enjoy the evening and really participate in the conversation. Relax and enjoy your food and your guests!

Sales Training Brisbane - Why Business Coaching is Important for ...

In these times of cut throat competition, manpower is the most important resource. In order to enter new areas and also to protect and grow in existing businesses, the organizations have to continuously work on maintaining the entry barriers of their field and also to scale the barriers in new fields.

To successfully achieve this, it is of utmost importance, organization must work on development of their employees and business processes, to enable them to meet the challenges. One good way of doing this is to resort to Business Coaching in which experts are hired to groom and maintain the organization along with its personnel like a sports coach does.

Though the concept looks simple, "Hire a business consultant, identify the target group and let it go". But the whole thing is not so easy especially when the final result counts. The various challenges in the whole process are:- a) To identify the needs of the organization.

b) To identify the skill sets and the right organization to match those skills sets.

c) To develop a proper feedback mechanism to asses results and realign if necessary. Let's consider each element in brief. a) To identify the needs of the organization:

The needs can be categorized in terms of internal factors as well as external factors.
