  • In her syndicated column, Michelle Malkin depicted newly finalized fuel economy standards as dangerous to consumers. But in fact, standards have been reformed to remove incentives for smaller, potentially less safe cars, and technological improvements have made many smaller cars just as safe as larger vehicles.

  • In an attempt to shield Mitt Romney's campaign from criticism that many of its claims against the Obama administration are based on falsehoods, conservative media have resorted to attacking fact-checkers, accusing them of liberal bias or of "shilling" for the Obama campaign. This is in keeping with the position of the Romney campaign, which has said, "We're not going to let our campaign be dictated by fact-checkers."

  • Two recent falsehoods from the Mitt Romney campaign have received media attention: the false claim that President Obama removed the work requirement from welfare, and the false claim that the health care reform bill "cuts" $716 billion from Medicare. While many mainstream media outlets debunked the false claims in much of their coverage, several -- particularly Fox News and The Wall Street Journal -- repeatedly failed to debunk the falsehoods.

Cozy relationship: Google is a top source of Obama campaign cash

President Obama has long had a cozy relationship with Google, and now his campaign can say the same, as people associated with the tech company have proven to be a major source of cash for his re-election.

Google ? not the company as such, but employees and affiliated entities ? is the number three source of campaign donations ($357,00) for Obama, as CNET found through a review of? Center for Responsive Politics data.

The show of support reinforces the ties between Obama and this company. The president violated his anti-lobbying pledge by allowing a Google vice president to weigh in, repeatedly and blatantly, on White House deliberations about? regulations pertaining to internet privacy that he wanted written in a way that would benefit his company.

?Maybe a millionaire who spends his days leaning on policymakers to benefit his company isn?t a lobbyist if he calls himself an ?Internet evangelist,?? The Washington Examiner?s Tim Carney quipped in reporting on the lobbying.

Obama also installed Google CEO Eric Schmidt onto his Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), per CNET, which also noted that Google?s director of global public policy left his job with the internet giant to work in the Obama White House as deputy chief technology officer.

Google employees haven?t just helped shape government policies that pertain to their company; they also help the president with messaging issues: It was a former Google employee Doug Edwards who helpfully asked Obama, at the height of his push for higher taxes on millionaires, ?Would you please raise my taxes??

The relationship between Google staff and Obama is no doubt motivated by some ideological agreement, but the company is keenly aware that it must influence government.

In fact, Google spent $5 million on lobbying in the first quarter of this year. It is also taking pains to cultivate the affection of political reporters, as Carney noted in a recent item from the Republican National Convention.

Many suspected ineligible CO voters US citizens

DENVER (AP) ? Nearly a third of people whose citizenship and right to vote were questioned by Colorado's secretary of state are actually U.S. citizens, election officials said Wednesday, prompting Democrats to question the motives behind the effort to clean up voting rolls as a tightly contested presidential election approaches.

Earlier this month, Republican Secretary of State Scott Gessler sent letters to nearly 4,000 people questioning their citizenship as part of a plan to have them voluntarily withdraw or confirm their eligibility to vote.

State officials were able to run 1,400 of those names through a federal immigration database and found that more than 1,200 were U.S. citizens. So far, they've found none who are non-citizens and registered to vote.

Martha Tierney, an attorney for the Colorado Democratic Party, told election officials during a meeting Wednesday that they were wasting their time on a small group of voters instead of focusing on ensuring a fair and accurate fall election.

"This is a witch hunt and you should be embarrassed that you're going down this road," she said.

Gessler's office plans to release updated figures on Thursday detailing how many of the 4,000 people responded directly to affirm their citizenship or withdraw their voter registration. He said no further action will be taken involving people who did not respond to the letters.

Democrats have criticized the effort to correct the voting rolls and said it could disenfranchise legal voters or make it difficult to exercise their right to vote. More than three-quarters of the letters went to Democrats and independent voters.

Gessler denies any political motivation and insists his goal is to maintain accurate voter rolls. His office said it did not look at party registration when sending the letters.

Gessler spokesman Rich Coolidge said that ensuring only eligible voters cast ballots is an important component of running a successful election.

"As the state's chief election official, he is obligated to make sure that only eligible voters are casting ballots," Coolidge said before the hearing. "We identified a vulnerability in the system, we identified people who exploited, or accidentally exploited that vulnerability, and we're going to shut down that loophole."

Still, critics have questioned Gessler's political motivations in a year where both major parties see Colorado as key to winning the presidential election. Control of the state Legislature and competitive congressional races are also at stake.

Across the country Republicans have aggressively pursued initiatives to verify voters' citizenship, particularly in swing states, much to the ire of Democrats who worry that key parts of their base ? Latinos and seniors ? are likely to be disenfranchised.

Election chiefs in Iowa, Michigan, New Mexico and Ohio ? all expected to be competitive in November ? joined Colorado and other states asking the federal government for access to the database to verify citizenship. Colorado got access to the database last week.

Samantha Meiring, 37, a Colorado voter whose status was questioned, waved a letter as she told election officials Wednesday that she was speaking "as an immigrant and U.S. citizen who got a lovely little letter in the mail."

"I find it absolutely ridiculous that a U.S. citizen is being asked to jump through additional hoops to exercise a right to vote," said the registered Democrat, a South African immigrant who became a U.S. citizen in 2010. "I think you're chasing people that don't need to be chased."

A total of 1,566 letters went to Democrats and 1,794 went to unaffiliated voters. Another 486 letters were sent to Republicans.

Using information from the department of motor vehicles, Gessler identified people who once presented documents showing they were not citizens, such as a green card, when applying for a driver's license. It's unclear whether those people registered to vote by accident while getting a driver's license or when approached by someone as part of registration drive.

Gessler's office provided The Associated Press with the party affiliation of people who received the letters but denied a request to see their names, citing an ongoing investigation.

Democrats and voting advocacy groups said Gessler has shown no proof of widespread fraud and overreached by sending the letters.

"They basically sent out the functional equivalent of an email blast," said Mark Grueskin, an attorney who represents Democrats on election issues.

The American Civil Liberties Union in Colorado said at least 25 eligible voters who got the letters have contacted the organization and the number is growing.

Democrats do not want Gessler to hold hearings for the fewer than 200 remaining people whose citizenship status hasn't been verified on the federal immigration database. They say further hearings are unnecessary because county clerks already have the power to handle challenges to voter registrations.

If Gessler's plan to hold hearings is approved by his office, people could start receiving a new round of letters as soon as next week notifying them that their citizenship is in doubt.

Deputy Secretary of State Suzanne Staiert said the goal is to keep accurate voter rolls, and that officials are working in the best interest of immigrants who may be unaware that they're breaking the law by being registered to vote or by voting.

"I understand that you think this is a very small percentage," she told opponents of the plan, "but for these people, this is their life."

    Clear Choice

Although it?s been said thousands of times in thousands of different contexts, I?ll risk repeating it. There are two kinds of people in the world. The two kinds of people I?m referring to here are what Thackeray called ?the riders and the ridden,? or those who value success and those who value security. These two human classifications have been referred to as Individualists and Collectivist respectively.

Collectivism, which might be called the ant hill philosophy, had been the natural state of human society for over 10,000 years, having been necessitated by the constant threats of nature and of foreign Collectivist tribes. For most of that 10,000 years, Individualism was considered an anomaly, disconcerting if not dangerous. Then, a little over 200 years ago, a great change took place. The American Revolution not only legitimized Individualism, but institutionalized it as an integral part of American society and culture.

Individualism is a progressive outlook on life, and it has in fact been responsible for all of human progress. Every advancement in the human condition, from the inventions of the arch and the keel to iPads, has been accomplished by Individualism, never by Collectivism. Collectivism, on the contrary, detests innovation and enshrines the status quo as the greatest common good.

It is Individualism that is the sole source of the phenomenal economic success of the United States of America. It was an individual, Andrew Carnegie, who forged the steel rails that bound a nation together in the 1800s; it was an individual, Henry Ford, who created the first mass produced automobile, making Americans the first people in the world to enjoy dependable and affordable personal transportation; it was an individual, Jonas Salk, who cured the scourge of Infantile Paralysis; and it was an individual, Steve Jobs, who gave America and the world the personal computer.

Yes, Steve Jobs had help, but it was help that he chose himself, that he hired himself, and that he himself forged into a tool to build his objective. Without Steve Jobs, the help would never have and could never have built Apple Computer. It was Steve Jobs who had the vision. It was Steve Jobs who had the drive. It was Steve Jobs who had the Individualism to build something unique.

It was Individualism fostered by Harding and Coolidge that enabled the roaring twenties, the most prosperous and innovative period in the history of any nation. It was a period that brought America frozen foods (Clarence Birdseye), personal photography (George Eastman), a telephone (Alexander Bell) in every home, and a manufacturing machine that showered every American. with riches that King George III could not have imagined in his wildest dreams merely 150 years before. Collectivism, on the other hand, gave us Wilson?s depression of 1920, Prohibition, Hoover?s and Roosevelt?s depression of 1932 to 1942, Johnson?s Medicare and Medicaid debacle, and healthcare rationing under ?Obamanablecare.?

Individualism is the only source of personal freedom. As Individualism begets Individualism, it creates more and more people who walk their own quarter decks and chart their own courses. Henry Fords personal transportation machine empowered millions of Individualists to leave the farm in the twenties and migrate to the big cities to make their own fortunes. And the automobile inspired thousands of other Individualists to create and manufacture ancillary products such as sealed beam head lamps (Yasa Bobaganoosh), the electric starter (Charles Kettering), hydraulic brakes (Malcolm Lougheed), and safety glass (Rudolph Seiden) to name a few.

Individualism is living life to the fullest, with gusto, the way it was meant to be lived. The Individualist thrills to the pride of accomplishment and to the feeling of satisfaction when he can say, ?I built that! By myself!? Collectivists are afraid of risk and devoid of dreams and prefer to live off the scraps of the accomplishments of others. Individualists are outgoing, adventuresome, and informed; Collectivists are self-absorbed, self-protective, and intimidated by intellectual exploration beyond their belief system. Individualists want to make the world better; Collectivists want someone to take care of them.

In the final analysis, Collectivism is a condition of arrested childhood, while Individualism marks the attainment of adulthood.

Who should pay the real estate agent for apartment rental in NYC ...

August 25, 2012 in Mortgage by jedwan

I am a landlord and I recently rented out an apartment through a real estate agent. The tenant paid 1 month security, first month rent, and the last month rent of a 1 year lease. My real estate agent took the last month rent from my tenant as the commission. This means that I won?t get the last month rent when the lease is up. Is this how it works? I always thought that the tenants pay for the fees. In this case, I am paying for it.

The Online Networks of Next Gen Consoles ? MultiPlatform

As interest in next generation consoles increases, I?ve seen a lot of talk about what theoretical PS4, ?Xbox 720?, and Wii U games will look like, but I?m honestly just as interested in what their operating systems will be like. One major aspect of that is the social interaction.

Graphics are usually the biggest indicator of generational leaps in video games, but in my opinion the defining thing about the current consoles was how users operated the consoles. This was the first time game consoles had complex operating systems. We went from just putting the game in the machine and turning it on to browsing digital libraries, installing updates, and maintaining friends lists. I think the next gen consoles could present the most major shift in that functionality: a ?super? generation of these operating systems if you will. Just think about it: What do you think Xbox Live will look like on the next Xbox?

The first hint of this will probably come in the form of Nintendo?s touted MiiVerse service for the Wii U and eventually 3DS. They?ve confirmed that the Wii U will finally introduce traditional accounts for Nintendo users, but the company just had to put their own spin on things. From their initial presentation during E3 it sounds like each individual piece of software will have its own sort of message board where users can converse about that one game. Kotaku has already tried to compare it to facebook, but trying to look at it from the perspective of a Japanese company, I think it?ll probably resemble 2chan (Futaba channel) or 2channel or something like that.

For those that don?t know, 2channel is a Japanese textboard mostly consisting of brief, quick messages as opposed to Facebook or most message boards, and is actually one of the most populous internet communities in the world. Its offshoot, 2chan, was the predecessor to 4chan. If you?d like, twitter is probably the closest thing to a tamer English equivalent. Twitter itself, which I understand is quite popular in Japan, is also probably a good analog to what Nintendo is going for with MiiVerse.

It seems Nintendo wants to increase the amount of discussion and social interaction going on in-game, even with singleplayer games. Leaving messages for friends in-game sounds sort of like Demon?s Souls. Being able to access a message board while playing sounds a bit like how Shigeru Miyamoto designed the original Zelda so that people would beat it by discussing it with friends by the water cooler. In my opinion it?s a great example of building a whole social system around honest game design.

Hopefully with the Wii U?s year head start, whatever it brings to the table could have some influence on console gaming in general going forward.

Potentially even more interesting are where Microsoft and Sony plan to take XBL and PSN respectively. I think both of them are more likely to try to create full-blown social networks within their platforms.

No one has really made a video game specific ?Facebook? yet, at least not one ubiquitous within gaming, the closest thing in my experience possibly being 1up.com. I think it could potentially make a console extremely engaging if they made social interaction a bigger part of it.

Imagine if you will, booting up your Xbox 720 or PS4, and being greeted with a news feed of what games your friends have been playing, what achievements they got, high scores they beat, game reviews they wrote, or screenshots they posted. If they could get people to interact with that OS as much as they do with Facebook it could be something pretty major.

I think Microsoft has the bigger chance of going all the way with this, especially with the likely cross-compatibility between Windows 8 and the next Xbox. I imagine it?ll be some massive MSN and Live-based social network stretching across the platforms ? a new version of Facebook at the OS-level if you will. Sony might try to follow suit but I don?t think they?ll have the initiative.

We?re already seeing the beginnings of this kind of system with Steam?s upcoming community updates though. Steam is what I wish all the console manufacturers would copy for next gen.

Steam as-is already gives you a news feed of what games and achievements your friends got, and gives you vital information like how many hours each of your friends has played a game as well as any recommendations they?ve written. Later this fall Steam will supposedly give players their own hub pages Facebook-style with updates, screenshots, and the like. Each game will have a hub page with popular screenshots, mods, and forums.

In my opinion this console generation has been more about services than hardware. The main reason most people buy games for the Xbox 360 over the PS3 is because they want to stay plugged into Xbox Live. Hopefully all three console manufacturers will take this to heart next gen.

    BULLETS:

    • Honestly, I?m not mad about The World End With You coming to iOS instead of us getting a sequel, but only because I never bought the game in the first place and can now probably get it cheaper.

Push to recall Pacific Mayor Cy Sun begins

    By SHAWN SKAGER
    Auburn Reporter Sports Reporter
    August 24, 2012 ? Updated 10:33 AM?

The push to recall Pacific Mayor Cy Sun gained momentum on Thursday with the official signing and filing of the complaint against him.

Committee to Recall Cy Sun Chairman Don Thomson signed the 200-page document ? a 28-page complaint with more than 170 pages of supporting evidence ? at Pacific City Hall and turned it over to lawyer Jeffery Helsdon.

?All I can say is I can?t give enough credit to all the volunteers,? Thomson said. ?The work they?ve done is phenomenal.?

The complaint documents the hostile work environment the committee alleges Sun has created since he assumed office in January, including ?use of threats, retaliation for opposing opinions and harassment.?

?The City of Pacific is now without a single department head,? the committee wrote in a press release. ?All department heads have either quit or been fired by Mayor Sun. There is no executive-level functioning in any department, leaving the City at great risk of complete failure.?

The complaint also cites former employees who have filed legal complaints against the City and Sun, including former City Clerk Jane Montgomery, who has filed a claim for damages of $2.2 million.

Helsdon now will turn the complaint over to the King County Auditor and Elections office, which will forward it to the King County Prosecutor.

According to Helsdon ? who along with his attorney partner Thomas Oldfield successfully shepherded a recall petition of Pierce County Auditor Dale Washam through the courts in 2011 ? the King County Prosecutor will then determine whether the allegations against Sun warrant filing the petition, which starts the legal process of the recall. If the prosecutor determines the charges are valid, he will draft the language of the petition and the ballot synopsis and file it with King County Superior Court.

?If the judge approves, then that will be the language on the ballot,? Helsdon said, adding that the judge can change or add to the ballot synopsis.

Once the judge approves, Helsdon said, he will file a sufficiency hearing motion on behalf of the committee.

?The judge?s job then is not to determine the truth of the charges, but rather to find if there is factual and legal sufficiency of the charges of misfeasance and malfeasance,? Helsdon said.

If the judge rules for the recall petition, Sun can appeal the decision to the Washington State Supreme Court.

If no appeal is filed, the Committee must wait 16 days before beginning to collect the more than 405 signatures needed to qualify the recall for the ballot.

Once the required number of signatures is gathered and verified, a vote must be held within 45-60 days.

?When I said I wanted to do a recall and needed help, a lot of people stepped up,? Thomson said. ?I?m just overwhelmed with where we?re at right now.?

Attorney weighs in on Delegate Don Dwyer's legal implications ...

Attorney weighs in on Anne Arundel Co. boating crash

    PIKESVILLE, Md. ?

Anne Arundel County state Delegate Republican Don Dwyer potentially faces serious legal charges. Experts said his political future is in doubt.

Political and legal experts believe Dwyer's attempt to get out in front of his drunken boat collision does him more harm than good.

"It's inappropriate for him... it's dead wrong -- I understand what's he's doing. He's seeking repentance. There is a time. There is a place. Children were hurt. There is no excuse," attorney Bruce Robinson said. "He has to know all the facts before he starts apologizing and saying, 'I had a .2 (percent blood alcohol level),' because he's painting himself into a corner, which he may never be able to get out from."

Robinson of Robinson Associates in Pikesville is an expert in Maryland DUI and DWI law. Robinson said he believes Dwyer faces several charges.

"The biggest charge he has is operating under the influence, operating, in his case, a vessel or boat under the influence. It carries a maximum of a year, and then there's a reckless charge that can be associated with that which carries another 30 days on top of that," Robinson said.

Dwyer and his boat passenger John Moran, a political candidate in 2010 and current police officer at the University of Maryland, Baltimore campus, collided with another motorboat on the Magothy River on Wednesday. Dwyer and several children, ended up in the hospital.

Sources tell 11 News investigators are looking into the bar tab Dwyer and Moran ran up at an Eastern shore establishment prior to the crash.

UMBC officials tell 11 News they see no reason to discipline Moran.

Dwyer declared his alcohol level was more than twice the legal limit at the time.

Legal experts contend the amount, the accident and the fact children were hurt will be unforgivable to a judge.

The Best Article Writing Services For Getting Real Articles Written

In The World Of Article Writing Services, Not All Are Created Equally

OK so your a shitty writer, we get it!

You wrote an article once in hopes of?promoting?your?business?and deleted it because of how much it sucked, then you figured ? why not use article writing services.

You sign up to the usual suspects in the ?Article Marketing? world only to realize that these so called ?article writing? experts are even worst writers than you are.

After reading their?gibberish?you found yourself wondering if these people are illiterate or in the 3rd grade.

Do Yourself A Favor, STOP Googling ?article writing services??Please!

That?s?probably?how you got here and I?m?grateful,?but before you made it here?.You ran into those guys, Uh-huh?those guys.

You know who those guys are, the ones selling that SEO crack on Google Street, off of the Spam Express way. Headlines that scream ?Expert SEO Writing,? ?Article Spinning,? ?Article Distribution? blah blah blah. The moment someone says SEO Writing, that means they?re writing for search engines not people. You should run away when you see that, you either write for real people or shoot yourself in the face which is exactly what your doing trying to cater to search engines.

I?m not saying don?t do SEO with the help of article writing services, I?m saying you should first define (better yet re-define) what SEO means. Once you?ve done that then your going to find your self googling terms like ?professional copy writers? and ?copy writing services.? You?ll be hard press to find any SEO crack dealers on that street.

Unless It?s a Stripper ?Spinning? Her Sweet Booty around A?Strip Pole?I Don?t Want It.

    Article spinning?.Please, make it stop.

    Oh, I get it.

This year 2087, my grand kids just bought their first home on the planet Google Mars (you know, cause Google buys everything),?augmented?reality is now old school, and prostitutes are actual cyborgs that make you dinner while giving you a blowy. Oh and all you have to do is tell a software about a topic you want written and it will spit out the most profound peace of literature you?ve ever read.

Oh that?s right, it?s not 2087, software can?t actually write anything that?s personal, witty, clever or professional.

Can you imagine some article spinning software trying to re-write this article your reading right now? Get the F*ck out of here!

If your?intention?is to stuff some website you don?t care about with useless?grammatically?incorrect connect, then spin that sh*t yow! But if this is something linked to a real business with an intention to drive real traffic people to your product or service, stay away from anything trying to sell you on spinning, leave that to those ?internet marketing? douche bags.

The only way I?d recommend article spinning is if those spun articles get proof read by a real person which just seems counter productive to me.

Besides there is no software that can maintain coherent readable content, while making it unique to a point where Google doesn?t see it as duplicate content.

The services that I?m about to mention aren?t cheap (not?dirt bag?cheap?at-least), but their not super expensive either. Some I?ve used, some I haven?t had a chance to try yet.

It?s not a long so your R&D will be pleasant.

    The Best Article Writing Services

    1.?WriterAccess

These guys aren?t new to the content marketing space, their content marketplace created by IdeaLaunch connects customers?directly with expert writers. You can view a writers profile, what their good at writing, contact them etc. Think social network but for writers. These are real people.

They have the type of article writing quality that you?d want to use on your own website, and if the content is good enough for your website, then it?s most certainly good enough for submitting to article directories, as long as it?s one unique article per directory?.Remember that.

They have a full API that you can integrate with your own applications such as your a blog or CMS.

    2.?iWriter

This service is a few steps behind WriterAccess, and here?s why. It was created by a Internet Marketer and thus?attracts?those kinds of people. That being said, that internet marketing is Brad Callen, a guy who has had a long standing reputation in the Internet Marketing realm for creating great products and services. Two of which are the legendary SEO Elite and?Keyword?Elite?software.

I?ve had over 72 articles written by this service thus far, and I?ve built an entire website with those articles.

It?s expected that the writers on iWriter would know allot about Marketing, SEO and so forth, as far other other topics are concerened, I can?t speak on because all my articles were marketing based so you?ll need to do your own due diligence there.

They?re also not as feature filled as Writer Access, so no API, no elaborate writer profile just a writer?s overall rating.

    3.?TextBroker

TextBroker.com not to be mistaken with TextBrokers.com is service that?s similar to iWriter but with a bigger?variety?of writers that can cover many different topics. I know a few big time websites that have used this service to source content for their main site.

The back-end process for TextBroker is very similar to iWriter, You choose your minimum and maximum word count, you don?t pay extra if the writer goes over the max which is known to happen. You choose keywords or headlines that you want your content to be about, then you describe what specifications you require for your articles.

    4.?ContentDevelopmentPros

I?ve never personally used?ContentDevelopmentPros for any of my article writing needs but I have heard good things about them, they cover many different topics such as Real Estate, Finance, Technology, Photography, Music, and more.

They don?t just do articles, they?also?offer Press Release and E-Book writing services.

    Do you due?diligence.

    5. ContentProz

    Just like?Content Development Pros, I haven?t personally used?ContentProz.

They are not exclusively a article writing service, they provide a long list of services for content marketing so if your looking for a All-in-One ? you?should?check theme out.

    6. Scripted

Now we arrive at the big guy on campus, remember?when?I said these services aren?t cheap? I was mainly?referring?to these guys. Before you go any further, just so we?re clear this service is not for the little guys. If your goal is to have enterprise level, college graduate, journalist ready content written for your main site, this is where you?ll find it.

Scripted was launched as a subsidiary of?Scripped.com?a screenwriting software company. Scripped officially changed its name to Scripted in November of 2011.

If you follow the tech industry at all, then you?probably?already know about this service, it?s one of those Silicon Valley, Venture Capitalists born companies.

This?service?has been covered by the who?s who of media, such as TechCrunch, CNNMoney and NPR.

When you submit an article to these guys don?t expect to get it back in a few hours, no it?s not that type of service, prepare to wait a few days (3 minimum). Why? Because they?re going to do a ton of?research?first before writing a single word, the way a?journalist?would.

By the time their done, they?ll be experts on the topic.

They boast over 80,000 writers, allot of which are actual screenwriters that write scripts for plays, movies etc. They claim they get a new writer every 25 minutes.

They don?t just write your content, they also create Tweets, Facebook posts and Press Releases.

If you want the best of the best and you can afford it, I highly recommend these guys.

A few things that set these companies apart from any other on the web, with the exception of iWriter, they all have a phone number you can call and speak directly with someone. iWriter has great?help desk?support though. You get to review the article before you accepts it or pay.

This is why services like these are better suited than lets say oDesk or Elance, these?services?were built?specifically?for content creation and are thus are more effective.

This list should be all you need for your content marketing needs.

    Thanks for reading?.

    Chozen.

Five Stars For All: 2013 Ford Explorer, Taurus, Lincoln MKS Earn Top NHTSA Rating

Three 2013 Ford and Lincoln models have achieved a top score in the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration?s crash testing. Five star ratings have been awarded to the 2013 Ford Taurus, 2013 Ford Explorer, and the 2013 Lincoln MKS.

In NHTSA?s New Car Assessment Program (NCAP), all three cars earned an overall vehicle score of five stars. The score factors in frontal and side-impact testing with the vehicle?s ability to resist rolling over. They are the only Ford and Lincoln products to achieve the top rating at this point in time. It?s not too surprising that all three vehicles earned the five-star rating ? after all, they?re all built on the same D3 platform.

Along with sharing platforms and powertrains, the Explorer, Taurus, and MKS also share a number of safety equipment that the Ford believes helped them earn a five-star rating. For 2013, Ford redesigned the passenger airbag and restraint systems in all three cars, and added a passenger-side knee airbag on the Explorer. All Tauruses, Explorers, and MKS models come standard with dual-stage driver and front passenger airbags, side impact airbags for front-seat passengers, and side curtain airbags for all rows of seating. Electronic stability control is standard on the Taurus and MKS; traction control with roll stability control is standard on the Explorer. Additional safety equipment like forward collision warning, blind spot monitoring, and rear inflatable seatbelts (Explorer only) are also available as options.

The 2013 Ford Taurus, Explorer, and?Lincoln MKS are all on sale now. Pricing starts at $27,395 for the Taurus, $29,695 for the Explorer, and $43,685 for the MKS. (All prices include destination charges.)

Could Paul Ryan's small business ties aid the GOP ...

NEW YORK (AP) ? On his way to becoming a congressman from his hometown of Janesville, Wis., Paul Ryan worked in a small business ? a construction company with roots that reach back to the firm that his great-grandfather started in 1884.

Although the future GOP vice presidential candidate worked at Ryan Inc. Central doing marketing for just a short time ? from 1997-98 ? that experience may help the Romney-Ryan ticket. The obstacles that small businesses face hiring more workers are among the biggest issues in this presidential election. The perception that Ryan understands their problems could bring in votes ? even though he was chosen largely because of his conservative stance on federal spending.

"I always appreciate folks who have spent time in the real world," says Nick Balletta, CEO of TalkPoint, a New York firm that runs online broadcasts for businesses. "In the real world, there's payroll that needs to be made, bills that need to be paid and customers that need to be satisfied."

The GOP might convince business owners that despite the brevity of Ryan's time at the company that "it was a valid experience and he would be more likely to understand their situation," says Trey Grayson, director of Harvard University's Institute of Politics. He also may appeal to independent voters including small business owners in parts of states like Wisconsin, Florida, Nevada, Illinois and Michigan that have struggled more than other areas of the country, says David McCuan, a political science professor at Sonoma State University in Rohnert Park, Calif.

"Ryan helps at some level in certain states," he says. "It's an open question of whether he helps in the big picture."

Both Ryan and Vice President Joe Biden have spent almost all their working lives in politics. Biden was elected to the New Castle, Del., City Council shortly before he turned 27 and to the Senate when he was nearly 30. Ryan was 28 when he was elected to Congress. Biden's resume doesn't include time at a small business, but he talks about the financial struggles of his father, who lost money in business ventures, had to move in with Biden's grandfather and had jobs that included cleaning boilers and managing a car dealership. That has helped voters identify with his middle-class childhood, McCuan says.

"Biden does a really good job of connecting with the common working person" and that appeals to small business owners, he says.

Ryan has that quality as well, and "brings that everyman kind of pitch" to the GOP ticket, McCuan says. That can mitigate the feeling among voters that Romney can't connect with people, he says. But, he adds, both candidates look like a regular guy, someone you'd want to have a beer with.

Biden's experience as vice president is more relevant than his resume.? "No matter what the background of Joe Biden was before, that trumps everything else," Grayson says. ?

Nonetheless, Ryan's small business ties will likely come up during the campaign.

Ryan Inc.'s operations include excavation and building site preparation for commercial and residential construction. It also builds golf courses and creates wetlands. Although it's based in Janesville, much of its work is done elsewhere ? it has offices in Elgin, Ill., and Hagerstown, Md., and has worked on projects across the Midwest, Northeast and Southeast.

"What we do is move piles of dirt from one place to another" using equipment like bulldozers, says Adam Ryan, company president and Paul Ryan's cousin. Their grandfathers were brothers.

The company has between 100 and 125 full-time employees at its three locations and during the construction season, that number rises to between 300 and 500 workers, Adam Ryan says. Ryan Inc. is small enough that it doesn't make the list of the 40 biggest employers in Rock County, where Janesville is located. But the business is highly regarded in the city of nearly 64,000 because of the connection to the Ryan family, says Vic Grassman, Janesville's director of economic development.

The cousins went to high school together but didn't work together at Ryan Inc. Adam joined the firm after Paul was elected to Congress. Paul Ryan, who earned less than $30,000 at Ryan Inc., helped the company "figure out what kind of work we should be pursuing," Adam says.

"My recollection is that it did lead to projects for us," Adam says. Neither he nor the Romney campaign could provide specifics. Paul Ryan doesn't have an ownership stake in the company, according to his cousin and the campaign.

Like other Republican lawmakers, Paul Ryan has called for the repeal of the health care law that the Supreme Court upheld in June. He's critical of government spending and regulations created under the Obama administration. Although Ryan and Romney have campaigned on issues like health care and regulations that affect small companies, Adam Ryan says his biggest concern as a small business owner is getting more sales in a construction environment that remains weak following the recession.

"The biggest challenge for us is a lack of (real estate) development ? people not doing things that require our services," he says.

He says of other issues, "all of that really does pale in comparison to getting more business."

Being part of a big, prominent family in Janesville helped Ryan win his first election to Congress in 1998. The family gained its status from the construction company and today, Ryans are known in the city for being involved in a variety of businesses including concrete and excavation, says Stan Milam, a reporter for the Janesville Gazette. Paul Ryan's father, an attorney, wasn't involved in the construction firm.

Neither campaign would directly address whether they think Ryan's background will boost Romney's chances. The Romney campaign says Ryan understands that the national debt is a drag on job creation and hurts small business. The Obama campaign says Ryan is leaving small business owners in the dust to favor tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires.

Groups that lobby on behalf of small businesses say Ryan's ties to small business will help Romney.

"Growing up around a family business provides a firsthand account of the?challenges and opportunities facing?entrepreneurs. This will be an asset for Ryan out on the campaign trail," says Karen Kerrigan, president of the Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council. "What matters most is whether?the policies?Ryan espouses are?the priorities of?small business owners, and in this regard he is spot on.??Tax simplification, a competitive and affordable?health care system, regulatory sanity and sound fiscal policies -- these are the priorities of entrepreneurs."

His specific role at the company may sway some small business owners.

"Having worked in the marketing department, I think he would have learned very quickly that there is no place that a small business can go inexpensively to market themselves," says Ricky Eisen, owner of Between the Bread, a New York caterer. When someone has worked in a small business, "you get a sense of where the angst is," says Eisen.

Kenneth Mayer, a political science professor at the University of Wisconsin at Madison, cautions against putting too much weight on Ryan's small business ties as an election issue. He has followed Ryan since his first congressional election campaign.

"You can overstate the degree to which people need to feel that connection" with Ryan as a small business owner, he says. "This campaign is not going to be won or lost based on the vice president selection."

There's little data on how important a vice presidential nominee is to voters, says Joe Lenski, a cofounder of Edison Research, which conducts voter polls for news organizations including The Associated Press. But, he says, "everyone has pretty much assumed that the running mate does not make much difference in the grand scheme of things."

Still, Harvard's Grayson says, "how do you get small business moving again" is a growing theme this election year ? as are issues like regulation, health care and taxes.

"On the campaign trail, it'll be interesting to see how big a role (Ryan's small business connection) plays," says Grayson. "It's one way to bring some of these issues closer to voters."

    Roger Clemens returning to baseball

HOUSTON (AP) ? When Roger Clemens pitches Saturday night for the Sugar Land Skeeters it will be the first time the 50-year-old has taken the mound in almost five years.

Will he still be the Rocket who intimidated hitters in the majors for more than 20 years? Or will his extended absence and age leave him struggling against players less skilled than the ones he used to face?

Clemens signed with the Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League on Monday and he is expected to start for the minor league team on Saturday at home against Bridgeport.

"His fastball was clocked at 87 mph. All of his pitches were working," said Randy Hendricks, Clemens' agent. "He threw a three-inning simulated game after an extensive workout warmup."

Clemens and Skeeters manager Gary Gaetti have been talking about this "for months," Hendricks said. Clemens is expected to discuss his decision Tuesday during a news conference in Sugar Land, about 20 miles southwest of Houston.

His signing has some wondering if it is the first step in a return to the majors.

Minnesota Twins manager and fellow Texas Longhorn Ron Gardenhire cracked a joke when asked about Clemens on Monday.

"I'll take that Longhorn any day. I don't know all the rules, but I'll be tampering: We do have a spot, right?" Gardenhire said, chuckling.

Clemens, acquitted in June of charges he lied to Congress when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs, hasn't played for a team since pitching for the New York Yankees in 2007 at the age of 45. He went 6-6 in 18 games with a 4.18 ERA that season.

Texas Rangers pitcher Roy Oswalt, a former teammate of Clemens with the Astros, is excited about his friend's return to baseball.

"I think he's going to show everybody that all that stuff that he had to go through had nothing to do with the success he had in the big leagues," Oswalt said. "He said he's going to do it a little bit and see how his body responds. I wouldn't be surprised next year if he's pitching in the big leagues for somebody."

Clemens has been throwing batting practice to one of his sons often, and Oswalt said that Clemens "feels pretty good."

Yankees manager Joe Girardi, who is three years younger than Clemens, said it is difficult to get that urge to compete out of your blood.

"He's always loved to compete," Girardi said of Clemens. "That's who he is. He kept coming back. There were times he felt he couldn't quite go a full season, but he gave it as much as he had. He loved to compete. That's a hard thing to replace is that competition. Guys miss it."

Clemens had two great seasons with the Astros after he turned 40, going 18-4 with a 2.98 ERA in 2004 to win his record seventh Cy Young Award. He was 13-8 with a career-low 1.87 ERA in 2005.

Clemens earned $160 million and won 354 games in a 24-year career with the Red Sox, Blue Jays, Yankees and Astros. His 4,672 strikeouts are third-most and he was named to 11 All-Star games.

Now he will see what he has left for the Skeeters. He joins a roster that includes former major league pitchers Tim Redding and Scott Kazmir and Jason Lane, a teammate of Clemens' on Houston's 2005 World Series team.

"That's great, if he thinks he can do it," Gardenhire said. "He worked harder than anybody I've ever seen. His routine and program, I don't think too many people could stay with that. If he has continued to work out, he's probably in good enough shape. (He's) a big strong Texan."

It isn't clear how long Clemens will pitch for the Skeeters.

"This is a one-game-at-a-time thing," Hendricks said. "Let's see how he does on Saturday."

Some in baseball weren't quite as keen on the idea as Oswalt.

"He didn't travel with the Astros half the time toward the end there," Oakland pitcher Brett Anderson said. "I can't imagine him traveling for the Sugar Land Skeeters. I'm sure they'll draw a good crowd and it will be fun, but it's kind of those things you read about it and you're like: 'What's he doing?'"

Clemens is set to appear on the Hall of Fame ballot going to voters late this year. If he plays in another major league game, his Hall consideration would be pushed back five years.

Clemens was accused of using steroids and HGH in the Mitchell Report on drugs in baseball, something he denied. The Justice Department began an investigation concerning whether Clemens had lied under oath, and in 2010 a grand jury indicted him on two counts of perjury, three counts of making false statements and one count of obstructing Congress when he testified during a deposition and at a hearing that he never used any performance-enhancing drugs.

He was acquitted of all the charges on June 19 after a 10-week trial and has largely stayed out of the public spotlight until now.

"I think he's going to come back and try to prove a lot of doubters wrong," Oswalt said.

The signing was first reported by Houston television station KRIV.

Mars rover Curiosity begins driving at Bradbury landing

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? NASA's Mars rover Curiosity has begun driving from its landing site, which scientists announced today they have named for the late author Ray Bradbury.

Making its first movement on the Martian surface, Curiosity's drive combined forward, turn and reverse segments. This placed the rover roughly 20 feet (6 meters) from the spot where it landed 16 days ago.

NASA has approved the Curiosity science team's choice to name the landing ground for the influential author who was born 92 years ago today and died this year. The location where Curiosity touched down is now called Bradbury Landing.

"This was not a difficult choice for the science team," said Michael Meyer, NASA program scientist for Curiosity. "Many of us and millions of other readers were inspired in our lives by stories Ray Bradbury wrote to dream of the possibility of life on Mars."

Today's drive confirmed the health of Curiosity's mobility system and produced the rover's first wheel tracks on Mars, documented in images taken after the drive. During a news conference today at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., the mission's lead rover driver, Matt Heverly, showed an animation derived from visualization software used for planning the first drive.

"We have a fully functioning mobility system with lots of amazing exploration ahead," Heverly said.

Curiosity will spend several more days of working beside Bradbury Landing, performing instrument checks and studying the surroundings, before embarking toward its first driving destination approximately 1,300 feet (400 meters) to the east-southeast.

"Curiosity is a much more complex vehicle than earlier Mars rovers. The testing and characterization activities during the initial weeks of the mission lay important groundwork for operating our precious national resource with appropriate care," said Curiosity Project Manager Pete Theisinger of JPL. "Sixteen days in, we are making excellent progress."

The science team has begun pointing instruments on the rover's mast for investigating specific targets of interest near and far. The Chemistry and Camera (ChemCam) instrument used a laser and spectrometers this week to examine the composition of rocks exposed when the spacecraft's landing engines blew away several inches of overlying material.

The instrument's principal investigator, Roger Weins of Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico, reported that measurements made on the rocks in this scoured-out feature called Goulburn suggest a basaltic composition. "These may be pieces of basalt within a sedimentary deposit," Weins said.

Curiosity began a two-year prime mission on Mars when the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft delivered the car-size rover to its landing target inside Gale Crater on Aug. 5 PDT (Aug. 6 EDT). The mission will use 10 science instruments on the rover to assess whether the area has ever offered environmental conditions favorable for microbial life.

In a career spanning more than 70 years, Ray Bradbury inspired generations of readers to dream, think and create. A prolific author of hundreds of short stories and nearly to 50 books, as well as numerous poems, essays, operas, plays, teleplays, and screenplays, Bradbury was one of the most celebrated writers of our time.

His groundbreaking works include "Fahrenheit 451," "The Martian Chronicles," "The Illustrated Man," "Dandelion Wine," and "Something Wicked This Way Comes." He wrote the screenplay for John Huston's classic film adaptation of "Moby Dick," and was nominated for an Academy Award. He adapted 65 of his stories for television's "The Ray Bradbury Theater," and won an Emmy for his teleplay of "The Halloween Tree."

JPL manages the Mars Science Laboratory/Curiosity for NASA's Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The rover was designed, developed and assembled at JPL.
