Domestic Violence and Your Kids: Rihanna and Chris Brown: Impact ...

Chris Brown and Rihanna?s dysfunctional love story deepens as the days move forward. Between subliminal tweets and drunken videos posted about the emotional triangle ? one has to wonder ? what messages are these superstars sending to kids and teens? Many of us have been in relationships that were a bit confusing (maybe a significant other got caught cheating or lied unnecessarily), but let?s be real; how many of our relationships have drained the social media sphere more than this one? It?s like a long online nightmare fueled with tweets, videos, and photo-ops!

All and all, its a little bit sad, a little bit depressing, and a little bit scary?

According to NECN:

(NECN) ? The entertainment world continues to buzz over rumors that pop stars Rihanna and Chris Brown have reunited.

Brown reportedly broke up with his girlfriend and said that he wants to work on his relationship with Rihanna.

The pair made national headlines back in 2009, when photos of a bruised and battered Rihanna surfaced.

Brown later pleaded guilty to assault charges connected to the female singer and was issued a restraining order.

With a documented ? and highly publicized ? history of domestic violence, many are wondering what message the reconciliation will send to young fans.

Harvard Sociologist Hilary Levey Friedman joined ?The Morning Show? to discuss the topic.

So why should we care if Rihanna and Chris Brown get back together? Friedman said?

Rihanna wrote on her Twitter account that her relationships aren?t anybody?s business except for her and her partner. But Rihanna has over 26 million followers on Twitter, where she posts about her work and, yes, her personal life. Obviously at least 26 million people are interested in various aspects of her business.

We know from research on press coverage and people?s response to it that Americans see professional athletes, entertainers, and yes, even politicians as pubic figures to be admired and emulated.

What message does this relationship send young fans? Friedman said?

This is particularly true when it comes to young people. People look to entertainers for suggestions of various kinds-fashion and music-and take their cues based on celebrities? behavior with friends and family. The Rihanna and Chris Brown relationship, which has admittedly been violent, impacts both male and female fans.

Girls worry that girls will think it is acceptable for them to endure various types of abuse at the hands of their dating partners-whether it be physical, emotional, or sexual.

Boys- Those who abuse young romantic partners are more depressed and more aggressive than their peers.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) sees teen dating violence as a public health problem that needs or be addressed.

Why? Because according to the CDC, ?Among adult victims of rape, physical violence, and/or stalking by an intimate partner, 22.4 percent of women and 15.0 percent of men first experienced some form of partner violence between 11 and 17 years of age.?

Isn?t this also an opportunity to teach children about second chances and young people?s ability to change? Friedman said?

While we don?t want children to think no one ever deserves a second chance in life, when someone is physically abused by a particular individual it is hard for the nature of that relationship to change. It doesn?t mean that the abuser will always abuse others, but that the relationship between two people has become toxic.

Chris Brown?s behavior recently (like getting a tattoo that looks like the abused pictures of Rihanna) is worrisome and sends the wrong message to those in the public and in his private life.

Social media and the ability to share videos (like the drunk video Chris Brown released) has further altered how young people interact with celebrities. If they kept their personal business more quiet than people might care less when it relates to young people, but in this case that has not happened.
